Make a black-and-white photocopy of a quilt pattern to easily see the placement of lights, mediums, and darks. Along the side of the photocopy, list the yardage for each fabric and draw an arrow to each fabric's location in the photo. Take the photocopy with you when you buy fabrics. It's easy to adapt or change fabrics when you're looking at the value and tone instead of colorful fabrics.
