Dim the Lights

To balance the placement of scrappy blocks in a quilt, I lay the blocks out in a pleasing arrangement on my dining room floor when it's dark outside. The dimmer switch makes it easy to lower the light until I can see the value of the fabrics, but not the colors. I move the blocks around until the contrast seems right, then double-check the color placement with the lights on.
