Finished block: 6" square

Quantities specified for 44/45"-wide, 100% cotton fabrics. All measurements include a 1/4" seam allowance. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

Cut the Fabrics

To make the best use of your fabrics, cut the pieces in the order that follows.

From the purple print, cut:

  • 6 -- 2-1/2x42" binding strips
  • 6 -- 1-1/2x42" strips
  • 4 -- 1-1/2x42" strips for inner border

From green print, cut:

  • 6 -- 1-1/2x42" strips
  • 4 -- 1-1/2x42" strips for middle border

From cream print, cut:

  • 2 -- 4-1/2x42" strips
  • 17 -- 6-1/2" squares
  • 36 -- 1-1/2x4-1/2" rectangles

From purple floral, cut:

  • 2 -- 2-1/2x42" strips
  • 36 -- 1-1/2x2-1/2" rectangles

From black floral, cut:

  • 5 -- 5-1/2x42" strips for outer border

Assemble the Blocks

1. Aligning long edges, sew together one purple print 1-1/2x42" strip and one green print 1-1/2x42" strip to make a strip set A (see Diagram 1). Press the seam allowance toward the green print strip. Repeat to make a second strip set A. Cut the strip sets into a total of thirty-six 1-1/2" wide A segments.

2. Sew together two A segments to make a Four-Patch unit (see Diagram 2). Press the seam allowance in one direction. The pieced Four-Patch unit should measure 2 ½" square, including the seam allowances. Repeat to make a total of 18 Four-Patch units.

3. Aligning long edges, sew a purple print 1-1/2x42" strip and a green print 1-1/2x42" strip to opposite edges of a purple floral 2-1/2x42" strip to make a strip set B (see Diagram 3). Press the seam allowances toward the purple floral strip. Repeat to make a second strip set B. Cut the strip sets into a total of thirty-six 1-1/2"-wide B segments.

4. Aligning long edges, sew a purple print 1-1/2x42" strip and a green print 1-1/2x42" strip to opposite edges of a cream print 4-1/2x42" strip to make a strip set C (see Diagram 4). Press the seam allowances toward the cream print strip. Repeat to make a second strip set C. Cut the strip sets into a total of thirty-six 1-1/2"-wide C segments.

5. Referring to Diagram 5, sew a purple floral 1-1/2x2-1/2-" rectangle to opposite edges of a Four-Patch unit. Press the seam allowances toward the purple floral rectangles. Then sew a B segment to the remaining edges of the Four-Patch unit to make a block center. Press the seam allowances toward the B segments.

6. Referring to Diagram 6, sew a cream print 1-1/2x4-1/2" rectangle to opposite edges of the block center. Press the seam allowances toward the cream print rectangles. Sew a C segment to the remaining edges of the block center to complete a block. Press the seam allowances toward the C segments. The pieced block should measure 6 ½" square, including the seam allowances.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to make a total of 18 blocks.

Assemble the Quilt

1. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram for placement, lay out the pieced blocks and the cream print 6-1/2" setting squares in seven horizontal rows, alternating blocks and setting squares.

2. Sew together the squares in each row. Press the seam allowances toward the setting squares.

3. Join the rows to make the quilt center. Press the seam allowances in one direction. The pieced quilt center should measure 30-1/2x42-1/2", including the seam allowances.

Add Borders

1. Cut and piece the purple print 1-1/2x42" strips to make the following:

  • 2 -- 1-1/2x42-1/2" inner border strips
  • 2 -- 1-1/2x32-1/2" inner border strips

2. Sew the long purple print inner border strips to the long edges of the pieced quilt center. Then add the short purple print inner border strips to the short edges of the pieced quilt center. Press the seam allowances toward the inner border.

3. Cut and piece the green print 1-1/2x42" strips to make the following:

  • 2 -- 1-1/2x46-1/2" middle border strips
  • 2 -- 1-1/2x32-1/2" middle border strips

4. Sew the short green print middle border strips to the short edges of the pieced quilt center. Then join the long green print middle border strips to the long edges of the pieced quilt center. Press the seam allowances toward the middle border.

5. Cut and piece the black floral 5-1/2x42" strips to make the following:

  • 2 -- 5-1/2x56-1/2" outer border strips
  • 2 -- 5-1/2x34-1/2" outer border strips

6. Sew the short black floral outer border strips to the short edges of the pieced quilt center. Then join the long black floral outer border strips to the long edges of the pieced quilt center to complete the quilt top. Press the seam allowances toward the outer border.

Complete the Quilt

1. Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing. Quilt as desired.

2. Use the purple print 2-1/2x42" strips to bind the quilt.
