Row Houses Wall Quilt

Materials
- 1-3/8 yards tan tone-on-tone (blocks, sashing)
- 1 yard total assorted prints in red, brown, gold, blue, and green (blocks, appliqués)
- Scraps of pink print and tan plaid (block, appliqué)
- 1/8 yard green tone-on-tone (sashing)
- 1/4 yard pink tone-on-tone (inner border)
- 1 yard brown floral (outer border, binding)
- 1-3/4 yards backing fabric
- 30x62" batting
- Perle cotton No. 12: black
- Lightweight fusible web
Finished quilt: 21-1/2x53-1/2"
Quantities are for 44/45"-wide, 100% cotton fabrics.
Measurements include 1/4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.
Cut Fabrics
Cut pieces in the following order. Cut tan tone-on-tone sashing strip lengthwise (parallel to selvages).
Click on "Download this Project" for patterns. To use fusible web for appliquéing, complete the following steps.
1. Lay fusible web, paper side up, over patterns. Use a pencil to trace each pattern the number of times indicated in cutting instructions, leaving 1/2" between tracings. Cut out each fusible-web shape roughly 1/4" outside traced lines.
2. Following the manufacturer's instructions, press each fusible-web shape onto wrong side of designated fabric; let cool. Cut out fabric shapes on drawn lines. Peel off paper backings.
From tan tone-on-tone, cut:
- 1--3-1/2x43-1/2" sashing strip
- 4--3" squares
- 10--2-1/2" squares
- 3--1-1/2x2-1/2" rectangles
- 2--1-1/2x7-1/2" sashing rectangles
- 1--1-1/2x6-1/2" rectangle
- 2--1-1/2x3-1/2" rectangles
From assorted red prints, cut:
- 1--2-1/2x4-1/2" rectangle
- 1--2-1/2x7-1/2" rectangle
- 1--4-1/2x5-1/2" rectangle
- 1 of Pattern C
- 1 each of patterns H and H reversed
From assorted brown prints, cut:
- 1--5-1/2x7-1/2" rectangle
- 2--2-1/2x4-1/2" rectangles
- 1--2-1/2x7-1/2" rectangle
- 1--4-1/2" square
- 3--1-1/2" squares
- 1 each of patterns D, E, G, H, H reversed, I, and I reversed
- 2 of Pattern F
From assorted gold prints, cut:
- 1--5-1/2x7-1/2" rectangle
- 2--2-1/2x4-1/2" rectangles
From assorted blue prints, cut:
- 1--4-1/2" square
- 1--2-1/2x4-1/2" rectangle
- 1 each of patterns B and B reversed
From assorted green prints, cut:
- 1--5-1/2x7-1/2" rectangle
- 1--4-1/2" square
- 1--2-1/2x4-1/2" rectangle
From pink print, cut:
- 1--3-1/2x7-1/2" rectangle
From tan plaid, cut:
- 1 of Pattern A
From green tone-on-tone, cut:
- 2--1-1/2x42" strips for sashing
From pink tone-on-tone, cut:
- 3--1-1/2x42" strips for inner border
From brown floral, cut:
- 4--4-1/2x42" strips for outer border
- 4--2-1/2x42" binding strips
Assemble House Blocks
Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on wrong side of each tan tone-on-tone 2-1/2" square and 3" square.
Assemble House Block 1
1. Sew together red print 2-1/2x4-1/2" rectangle and brown print 4-1/2" square to make house unit (Diagram 1). Press seam in one direction. The unit should be 6-1/2x4-1/2" including seam allowances.
2. Referring to Diagram 2, align a brown print 2-1/2x4-1/2" rectangle with right-hand end of a second brown print 2-1/2x4-1/2" rectangle. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on vertical brown print rectangle as shown. Stitch on marked line; trim seam allowance to 1/4" (Diagram 3). Press pieces open to make roof subunit.
3. Align a marked tan tone-on-tone 2-1/2" square with each end of roof subunit (Diagram 4). Stitch, trim, and press each square as before to make roof unit. The unit should be 6-1/2x2-1/2" including seam allowances.
4. Sew together a tan tone-on-tone 1-1/2x3-1/2" rectangle, a brown print 1-1/2" square, and a tan tone-on-tone 1-1/2x2-1/2" rectangle to make chimney unit (Diagram 5). Press seams toward brown print square. The unit should be 6-1/2x1-1/2" including seam allowances.
5. Sew together house, roof, and chimney units to make House Block 1 (Diagram 6). Press seams in one direction. The block should be 6-1/2x7-1/2" including seam allowances.
Assemble House Block 2
1. Referring to Diagram 7, align a marked tan tone-on-tone 2-1/2" square with each end of red print 2-1/2x7-1/2" rectangle. Stitch, trim, and press each square as before to make roof unit. The unit should be 7-1/2x2-1/2" including seam allowances.
2. Sew together roof unit and gold print 5-1/2x7-1/2" rectangle to make House Block 2 (Diagram 8). Press seam in one direction. The block should be 7-1/2" square including seam allowances.
3. Position tan plaid A window and blue print B and B reversed shutters on House Block 2 (Diagram 9). Following the manufacturer's instructions, fuse pieces in place. Using black perle cotton, blanket-stitch around each shape.
To blanket-stitch, refer to Blanket Stitch Diagram. Pull needle up at A. Form a reverse L shape with thread, and hold angle of L shape in place with your thumb. Push needle down at B and come up at C to secure stitch. Continue in same manner around entire shape.
Assemble House Block 3
1. Referring to Diagram 10, align a marked tan tone-on-tone 3" square with upper left-hand corner of green print 5-1/2x7-1/2" rectangle. Stitch, trim, and press as before.
2. Align a marked tan tone-on-tone 3" square with upper right-hand corner of Step 1 rectangle (Diagram 10). Stitch, trim, and press as before to make House Block 3A. The block should be 5-1/2x7-1/2" including seam allowances.
3. Using brown print 5-1/2x7-1/2" rectangle instead of green print, repeat steps 1 and 2 to make House Block 3B.
4. Referring to Diagram 11, arrange red print C door on House Block 3A; fuse in place. Arrange brown print D chimney and E door on House Block 3B; fuse in place. Using black perle cotton, blanket-stitch around appliqué shapes.
Assemble House Block 4
1. Sew together blue print 4-1/2" square and red print 4-1/2x5-1/2" rectangle to make house unit (Diagram 12). Press seam in one direction. The unit should be 9-1/2x4-1/2" including seam allowances.
2. Referring to Diagram 13, align blue print 2-1/2x4-1/2" rectangle with left-hand end of brown print 2-1/2x7-1/2" rectangle. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on blue print rectangle as shown. Stitch, trim, and press as before to make roof subunit.
3. Align a marked tan tone-on-tone 2-1/2" square with each end of roof subunit (Diagram 14). Stitch, trim, and press each square as before to make roof unit. The unit should be 9-1/2x2-1/2" including seam allowances.
4. Sew together two tan tone-on-tone 1-1/2x2-1/2" rectangles, two brown print 1-1/2" squares, and one tan tone-on-tone 1-1/2x3-1/2" rectangle in a row to make chimney unit (Diagram 15). Press seams toward brown print squares. The unit should be 9-1/2x1-1/2" including seam allowances.
5. Referring to Diagram 16, sew together house, roof, and chimney units to make House Block 4. Press seams in one direction. The block should be 9-1/2x7-1/2" including seam allowances.
6. Arrange two brown print F windows on House Block 4; fuse in place. Using black perle cotton, blanket-stitch around windows.
Assemble House Block 5
1. Referring to Diagram 17, align a marked tan tone-on-tone 2-1/2" square with upper left-hand corner of pink print 3-1/2x7-1/2" rectangle. Stitch, trim, and press as before.
2. Align a marked tan tone-on-tone 2-1/2" square with upper right-hand corner of Step 1 rectangle, overlapping first attached triangle (Diagram 17). Stitch, trim, and press as before to make house block 5. The block should be 3-1/2x7-1/2" including seam allowances.
3. Referring to Diagram 18, arrange brown print G window on House Block 5; fuse in place. Using black perle cotton, blanket-stitch around window.
Assemble House Block 6
1. Sew together green print 4-1/2" square and a gold print 2-1/2x4-1/2" rectangle to make house unit (Diagram 19). Press seam in one direction. The unit should be 6-1/2x4-1/2" including seam allowances.
2. Referring to Diagram 20, align a gold print 2-1/2x4-1/2" rectangle with left-hand end of green print 2-1/2x4-1/2" rectangle. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on gold print rectangle as shown. Stitch, trim, and press as before to make roof subunit.
3. Align a marked tan tone-on-tone 2-1/2" square with each end of roof subunit (Diagram 21). Stitch, trim, and press each square as before to make roof unit. The unit should be 6-1/2x2-1/2" including seam allowances.
4. Sew together house unit, roof unit, and tan tone-on-tone 1-1/2x6-1/2" rectangle to make House Block 6 (Diagram 22). Press seams in one direction. The block should be 6-1/2x7-1/2" including seam allowances.
Assemble Quilt Center
1. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram for placement, sew together house blocks in a horizontal row. Press seams in one direction. The row should be 7-1/2x41-1/2" including seam allowances.
2. Sew tan tone-on-tone 1-1/2x7-1/2" sashing rectangles to short edges of row. Press seams toward sashing rectangles.
3. Cut and piece green tone-on-tone 1-1/2x42" strips to make:
- 1--1-1/2x43-1/2" sashing strip
4. Add green tone-on-tone sashing strip to bottom edge of row. Sew tan tone-on-tone 3-1/2x43-1/2" sashing strip to top edge to make quilt center. Press seams toward sashing strips. The quilt center should be 11-1/2x43-1/2" including seam allowances.
5. Referring to photo, arrange red print H roof trim pieces on House Block 3A and brown print H roof trim pieces on House Block 3B; fuse in place. Arrange brown print I roof trim pieces on House Block 5; fuse in place. Using black perle cotton, blanket-stitch around roof trim pieces.
Add Borders
1. Cut and piece pink tone-on-tone 1-1/2x42" strips to make:
- 2--1-1/2x45-1/2" inner border strips
- 2--1-1/2x11-1/2" inner border strips
2. Sew short inner border strips to short edges of quilt center. Add long inner border strips to remaining edges. Press all seams toward inner border.
3. Cut and piece brown floral 4-1/2x42" strips to make:
- 2--4-1/2x53-1/2" outer border strips
- 2--4-1/2x13-1/2" outer border strips
4. Sew short outer border strips to short edges of quilt center. Add long outer border strips to remaining edges to complete quilt top. Press all seams toward outer border.
Finish Quilt
1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste. Quilt as desired.
2. Bind with brown floral binding strips.
