Assemble Basket Blocks
1. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on wrong side of each cream print 1-3/4" square.
2. For basket block 1, gather a set of pieces from cream print No. 1 (five marked 1-3/4" squares, three extra-large triangles, one basket corner, and one basket corner reversed) and pieces from purple print (one extra-large triangle, two medium triangles, five 1-3/4" squares, and one 1-3/8" square).
3. Layer a marked cream print 1-3/4" square atop a purple print 1-3/4" square. Sew together with two seams, stitching 1/4" on each side of drawn line (Diagram 1). Cut pair apart on drawn line to make two triangle units. Press each triangle unit open, pressing seams toward purple print, to make two small triangle-squares. Each small triangle-square should be 1-3/8" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 10 small triangle-squares total.
4. Sew together a cream print extra-large triangle and a purple print extra-large triangle to make a large triangle-square (Diagram 2). Press seam toward purple print. The large triangle-square should be 4-7/8" square including seam allowances.
5. Referring to Diagram 3, sew together five small triangle-squares to make a horizontal row; press seams in one direction. Join five remaining triangle-squares and purple print 1-3/8" square to make a vertical row; press seams toward purple print square. Sew horizontal row, then vertical row to cream edges of large triangle-square to make a block center. Press seams toward large triangle-square. The block center should be 5-3/4" square including seam allowances.
6. Sew together a cream print basket corner piece and a purple print medium triangle to make Corner Unit A (Diagram 4). Press seam toward purple print triangle.
7. Using a cream print basket corner reversed piece, repeat Step 6 to make Corner Unit B (Diagram 4).
8. Referring to Diagram 5, add Corner Unit A, then Corner Unit B to purple print edges of block center. Press seams toward block center. Sew cream print extra-large triangles to remaining edges of block center to make Basket Block 1. Press seams toward block center. If necessary, trim side and upper edges so block is 8-1/2" square including seam allowances; the basket will "float" in the finished block.
9. Using remaining cream prints and pink, orange, and blue prints, repeat steps 2–8 to make Basket Blocks 2, 3, and 4.
Assemble Chain Units
1. Sew together two pink floral 1-1/2" squares, one cream print No. 1--1-1/2" square, and one cream print No. 2--1-1/2" square in pairs (Diagram 6). Press seams in opposite directions. Join pairs to make Four-Patch Unit 1; press seam in one direction. The unit should be 2-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make a second Four-Patch Unit 1.
2. Lay out one cream print No. 1--1-1/2x2-1/2" rectangle, one cream print No. 2--1-1/2x2-1/2" rectangle, one pink floral 1-1/2" square, and one Four-Patch Unit 1 in two rows (Diagram 7; note position of cream prints in Four-Patch Unit). Join pieces in each row; press seams toward rectangles. Join rows to make Chain Unit 1A. Press seam in one direction. The unit should be 3-1/2" square including seam allowances.
3. Reversing placement of pieces, repeat Step 2 to make Chain Unit 1B (Diagram 8; again note position of cream prints in Four-Patch Unit).
4. Using cream print No. 2 and cream print No. 3 squares and rectangles, repeat steps 1–3 to make chain units 2A and 2B.
5. Using cream print No. 3 and cream print No. 4 squares and rectangles, repeat steps 1–3 to make chain units 3A and 3B.
6. Using cream print No. 4 and cream print No. 1 squares and rectangles, repeat steps 1–3 to make chain units 4A and 4B.
Assemble Chain Block
1. Referring to Diagram 9, lay out chain units 1A–4A, one 2-1/2x3-1/2" rectangle from each cream print, and pink floral 2-1/2" square in three rows.
2. Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams toward cream print rectangles. Join rows to make a chain block. Press seams toward middle row. The block should be 8-1/2" square including seam allowances.
Assemble Setting and Corner Triangles
1. Referring to Diagram 10, lay out three pink floral extra-small triangles, a cream print No. 1--1-1/2" square, and a cream print No. 1--1-1/2x2-1/2" rectangle in three rows. Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams toward triangles. Join rows to make Triangle Unit 1A. Press seams in one direction. Repeat to make a second Triangle Unit 1A.
2. Reversing placement of pieces, repeat Step 1 to make two of Triangle Unit 1B (Diagram 10).
3. Using cream print No. 2 squares and rectangles, repeat steps 1 and 2 to make two each of triangle units 2A and 2B.
4. Using cream print No. 3 squares and rectangles, repeat steps 1 and 2 to make two each of triangle units 3A and 3B.
5. Using cream print No. 4 squares and rectangles, repeat steps 1 and 2 to make two each of triangle units 4A and 4B.
6. Referring to Diagram 11, lay out one Triangle Unit 1A, one Triangle Unit 2B, one cream print No. 1-2-1/2x3-1/2" rectangle, one cream print No. 2-2-1/2x3-1/2" rectangle, Chain Unit 1B, and one pink floral large triangle in three rows. Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams toward cream print rectangles. Join rows to make Setting Triangle 1. Press seams in one direction.
7. Using triangle units 2A and 3B, cream print Nos. 2 and 3 rectangles, and Chain Unit 2B, repeat Step 6 to make Setting Triangle 2.
8. Using triangle units 3A and 4B, cream print Nos. 3 and 4 rectangles, and Chain Unit 3B, repeat Step 6 to make Setting Triangle 3.
9. Using triangle units 4A and 1B, cream print Nos. 4 and 1 rectangles, and Chain Unit 4B, repeat Step 6 to make Setting Triangle 4.
10. Referring to Diagram 12, sew together one Triangle Unit 1A, one Triangle Unit 1B, and one cream print No. 1--2-1/2x3-1/2" rectangle in a row; press seams toward rectangle. Add a pink floral small triangle to make Corner Triangle 1. Press seam toward triangle.
11. Using triangle units 2A and 2B and cream print No. 2 rectangle, repeat Step 10 to make Corner Triangle 2.
12. Using triangle units 3A and 3B and cream print No. 3 rectangle, repeat Step 10 to make Corner Triangle 3.
13. Using triangle units 4A and 4B and cream print No. 4 rectangle, repeat Step 10 to make Corner Triangle 4.
Assemble Quilt Center
1. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, lay out basket blocks, chain block, and setting triangles in three diagonal rows.
2. Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams toward basket blocks. Join rows; press seams in one direction. Add corner triangles to make quilt center. Press seams toward basket blocks. The quilt center should be 23" square including seam allowances.
Assemble and Add Borders
1. Sew pink floral 1-1/2x23" inner border strips to opposite edges of quilt center. Add pink floral 1-1/2x25" inner border strips to remaining edges. Press all seams toward inner border.
2. Cut and piece green, yellow, aqua, purple, pink, orange, and blue print 3-1/2"-wide rectangles to make:
- 2--3-1/2x31" outer border strips
- 2--3-1/2x25" outer border strips
3. Sew short outer border strips to opposite edges of quilt center. Add long outer border strips to remaining edges to complete quilt top. Press all seams toward outer border.
Finish Quilt
1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste. Quilt as desired.
2. Bind with pink floral binding strips.
