1-1/3 yards brown dot (Flying Geese units, blocks, binding)
1/2 yard orange argyle print (Flying Geese units)
1/4 yard orange dot (Flying Geese units)
18x22" piece (fat quarter) white car print (blocks)
5/8 yard blue train print (blocks)
2-1/2 yards backing fabric
45" square batting

Finished quilt: 36-1/2" square
Finished blocks: 12" square, 24" square

Quantities are for 44/45"-wide, 100% cotton fabrics.
Measurements include 1/4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

Cut Fabrics

Cut pieces in the following order.

Quilt tester Judy Sams Sohn cut some of the blue train print strips lengthwise (parallel to the selvages) so the print would run in the same direction in each piece of the finished quilt.

From brown dot, cut:
4-2-1/2x42" binding strips
2-4-1/2x16-1/2" strips
2-4-1/2x8-1/2" strips
2-2-1/2x8-1/2" strips
4-6-7/8" squares, cutting each in half diagonally for 8 triangles total
8-6-1/2" squares
2-2-1/2x4-1/2" strips

From orange argyle print, cut:
4-6-1/2x12-1/2" rectangles

From orange dot, cut:
4-6-7/8" squares, cutting each in half diagonally for 8 triangles total

From white car print, cut:
1-8-1/2" square
1-4-1/2" square

From blue train print, cut:
2-4-1/2x16-1/2" strips (for directional fabric, cut lengthwise)
2-2-1/2x8-1/2" strips (for directional fabric, cut lengthwise)
2-4-1/2x24-1/2" strips
2-2-1/2x12-1/2" strips

Assemble Flying Geese Units

1. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on wrong side of each brown dot 6-1/2" square.

2. Align a marked brown dot square with one end of an orange argyle print 6-1/2x12-1/2" rectangle (Diagram 1; note direction of marked line). Sew on marked line; trim seam allowance to 1/4". Press open attached triangle, pressing seam toward brown dot triangle.

3. Align a second marked brown dot square with opposite end of Step 2 rectangle (Diagram 1; again note direction of marked line). Stitch, trim, and press as before to make an orange argyle Flying Geese unit. The unit should be 12-1/2x6-1/2" including seam allowances.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to make four orange argyle Flying Geese units total.

5. Sew together a brown dot triangle and an orange dot triangle to make a triangle-square (Diagram 2). Press seam toward brown dot triangle. The triangle-square should be 6-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make eight triangle-squares total.

6. Referring to Diagram 3, sew together two triangle-squares to make an orange dot Flying Geese unit. Press seam open. The unit should be 12-1/2x6-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make four orange dot Flying Geese units total.

Assemble Large Block

1. Sew brown dot 4-1/2x8-1/2" strips to opposite edges of white car print 8-1/2" square (Diagram 4). Add brown dot 4-1/2x16-1/2" strips to remaining edges. Press all seams toward brown dot strips.

2. Sew blue train print 4-1/2x16-1/2" strips to opposite edges of Step 1 unit. Add blue train print 4-1/2x24-1/2" strips to remaining edges to make large block. Press all seams toward blue train print strips. The large block should be 24-1/2" square including seam allowances.

Assemble Small Block

1. Sew brown dot 2-1/2x4-1/2" strips to opposite edges of white car print 41/2" square (Diagram 5). Add brown dot 2-1/2x8-1/2" strips to remaining edges. Press all seams toward brown dot strips.

2. Sew blue train print 2-1/2x8-1/2" strips to opposite edges of Step 1 unit. Add blue train print 2-1/2x12-1/2" strips to remaining edges to make small block. Press all seams toward blue train print strips. The small block should be 12-1/2" square including seam allowances.

Assemble Quilt Top

1. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, sew together two orange argyle Flying Geese units and two orange dot Flying Geese units in a section. Press seams in one direction. The Flying Geese section should be 12-1/2x24-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make a second Flying Geese section.

2. Sew together Flying Geese sections, large block, and small block in pairs. Press seams toward blocks. Join pairs to complete quilt top. Press seam in one direction.

Finish Quilt

1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste. Quilt as desired.

2. Bind with brown dot binding strips.
