Assemble Blocks
Measurements include 1/4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions indicated by arrows on diagrams. If no direction is specified, press seam toward darker fabric.
1. Sew together a black print 1-1/2×42" strip and a solid white 1-1/2×42" strip to make Strip Set A (Diagram 1). Repeat to make three A strip sets total. Cut strip sets into seventy-two 1-1/2"-wide A segments.
2. Sew together a black print 1-1/2×42" strip and a green print 1-1/2×42" strip to make Strip Set B (Diagram 2). Repeat to make three B strip sets total. Cut strip sets into seventy-two 1-1/2"-wide B segments.
3. Sew together two A segments to make a black-and-white Four-Patch unit (Diagram 3). The unit should be 2-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 36 black-and-white Four-Patch units total.
4. Sew together two B segments to make a black-and-green Four-Patch unit (Diagram 4). The unit should be 2-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 36 black-and-green Four-Patch units total.
5. Sew together one black-and-white Four-Patch unit, two solid white 2-1/2" squares, and one black-and-green Four-Patch unit in pairs (Diagram 5). Join pairs to make a corner unit. The unit should be 4-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 36 corner units total.
6. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on wrong side of each solid white and gold print 1-1/2" square.
7. Align marked solid white and marked gold print squares with opposite corners of an assorted red print 2-1/2×4-1/2" rectangle (Diagram 6; note direction of marked lines). Sew on marked lines. Trim seam allowances to 1/4". Press open attached triangles. Add marked solid white and marked gold print squares to remaining corners to make a red rectangle unit. The unit still should be 2-1/2×4-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make 36 red rectangle units total (nine sets of four matching rectangle units).
8. Align marked solid white squares with opposite corners of an assorted print 2-1/2×4-1/2" rectangle (Diagram 7; note direction of marked lines). Sew on marked lines. Trim seam allowances to 1/4". Press open attached triangles. Add marked solid white squares to remaining corners to make an assorted rectangle unit. The unit still should be 2-1/2×4-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make 38 assorted rectangle units total.
9. Referring to Diagram 8, lay out four corner units, four matching red rectangle units, and one dark green print 2-1/2" square in three rows. Sew together pieces in rows. Join rows to make a block. The block should be 10-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make nine blocks total.
Assemble Quilt Center
1. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, lay out blocks in three rows. Sew together blocks in rows. Press seams in one direction, alternating direction with each row.
2. Join rows to make quilt center; press seams in one direction. The quilt center should be 30-1/2" square including seam allowances.
Assemble and Add Borders
1. Sew solid white 3-1/2×30-1/2" inner border strips to opposite edges of quilt center. Add solid white 3-1/2×36-1/2" inner border strips to remaining edges. Press all seams toward inner border. The quilt center now should be 36-1/2" square including seam allowances.
2. Sew together nine assorted rectangle units to make a short middle border strip (Quilt Assembly Diagram). The strip should be 2-1/2×36-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make a second short middle border strip. Sew short middle border strips to opposite edges of quilt center. Press seams toward middle border.
3. Sew together 10 assorted rectangle units to make a long middle border strip (Quilt Assembly Diagram). The strip should be 2-1/2×40-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make a second long middle border strip. Sew long middle border strips to remaining edges of quilt center. Press seams toward middle border. The quilt center now should be 40-1/2" square including seam allowances.
4. Piece and cut solid white 3-1/2×42" strips to make:
- 2—3-1/2×46-1/2" outer border strips
- 2—3-1/2×40-1/2" outer border strips

In the inner border, she added a swirl and pebble design and stitched a piano key and pebble design in the outer border.
3. Bind with dark red print binding strips.
