Need a faux headboard for a little girl's twin bed? Make three blocks, arrange them in a horizontal row, and add borders to make a cute-as-can-be wall hanging. To complete the look, sew a couple more blocks into matching throw pillows. Fabrics are from the Juliana collection by Sue Zipkin for Clothworks.

Cut Fabrics

Cut pieces in the following order. Click on "Download this Project" to download the full-size appliqué patterns.

To use fusible web for appliquéing, complete the following steps.

1. Lay fusible web, paper side up, over patterns. Use a pencil to trace each pattern the number of times indicated in cutting instructions, leaving 1/2" between tracings. Cut out each fusible-web shape roughly 1/4" outside traced lines. For less stiff appliqués, also cut 1/4" inside traced lines of each piece and discard centers.

2. Following the manufacturer's instructions, press fusible-web shapes onto wrong sides of designated fabrics; let cool. Cut out fabric shapes on drawn lines. Peel off paper backings.

From cream print, cut:
3-8-1/2x12-1/2" rectangles

From pink print, cut:
3 of Pattern A

From dark blue print, cut:
2-1-1/2x36-1/2" inner border strips
2-1-1/2x18-1/2" inner border strips
3 of Pattern B

From yellow print, cut:
3 of Pattern C

From lime green tone-on-tone, cut:
3 each of patterns D and D reversed

From lime green print scrap, cut:
3 of Pattern E

From each of the blue, green, and purple checks, cut:
1 of Pattern F

From each of the blue, green, and purple prints, cut:
12-2-7/8" squares

From pink leaf print, cut:
36-2-7/8" squares

From multicolor stripe, cut:
4-2-1/2x42" binding strips
2-5-1/2x38-1/2" outer border strips

2-5-1/2x28-1/2" outer border strips

Finished quilt: 48-1/2x28-1/2"
Finished block: 8x12"

Appliqué Blocks

1. Referring to Appliqué Placement Diagram, lay out one of each appliqué piece on a cream print 8-1/2x12-1/2" rectangle. Fuse all pieces in place.

2. Using threads that match appliqués and a narrow zigzag stitch, machine-appliqué around all edges, working from bottom layer to top, to complete a blue appliquéd block. The block should still be 8-1/2x12-1/2" including seam allowances.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to make three appliquéd blocks total.

Assemble Triangle Squares

1. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on wrong side of each pink leaf print 2-7/8" square.

2. Layer a marked pink leaf print square atop a blue print 2-7/8" square. Sew together with two lines, stitching 1/4" on each side of drawn line (Diagram 1).

3. Cut apart on drawn line to make two triangle units (Diagram 2). Press each triangle unit open, pressing seams away from pink leaf print triangles, to make two blue triangle-squares (Diagram 3). Each triangle-square should be 2-1/2" square including seam allowances.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to make 24 blue triangle-squares total.

5. Using green print 2-7/8" squares instead of blue print, repeat steps 2 and 3 to make 24 green triangle-squares.

6. Using purple print instead of blue print, repeat steps 2 and 3 to make 24 purple triangle-squares.

Assemble Quilt Top

1. Referring to Diagram 4, lay out 24 blue triangle-squares in four sections of six around an appliquéd block; note direction of seams in triangles squares. Sew together triangle-squares in each section; press seams open. Sew two sections to side edges of appliquéd block. Add remaining sections to top and bottom edges to make a blue bordered block. Press all seams away from appliquéd block. The bordered block should be 12-1/2x16-1/2" including seam allowances.

2. Using green triangle-squares and appliquéd block, repeat Step 1 to make a green bordered block. Using purple triangle-squares and appliquéd block, repeat Step 1 to make a purple bordered block.

3. Referring to photo, sew together the three bordered blocks to make the quilt center. The quilt center should be 36-1/2x16-1/2" including seam allowances.

4. Sew long blue print inner border strips to long edges of quilt center. Add short blue print inner border strips to remaining edges. Press all seams toward inner border.

5. Sew long multicolor stripe outer border strips to long edges of quilt center. Add short multicolor stripe outer border strips to remaining edges to complete quilt top. Press all seams toward inner border.
