Cut Fabrics

Cut pieces in the following order. Cut border strips lengthwise (parallel to the selvages). Click on "Download this Project" for pattern pieces. To use fusible web for appliquéing, complete the following steps.

1. Lay fusible web, paper side up, over patterns. Use a pencil to trace each pattern the number of times indicated in cutting instructions, leaving 1/2" between tracings. Cut out each fusible-web shape roughly 1/4" outside traced lines.

2. Following the manufacturer's instructions, press each fusible-web shape onto wrong side of designated fabric; let cool. Cut out fabric shapes on drawn lines. Peel off paper backings.

Appliqué Blocks

1. Fold a white print 18" square in half, then in half again. Press folds lightly, then unfold. Fold same square in half diagonally, then in half diagonally again. Press folds lightly to make a foundation square with placement guidelines; unfold square. Repeat to make four total foundation squares with guidelines.

2. Referring to Appliqué Placement Diagram, position the following appliqués on a foundation square: two each of green print A and A reversed leaves, four green print B leaves, four turquoise tone-on-tone C buds, one black tone-on-tone D flower, one turquoise tone-on-tone E circle, one large flower print F circle, and eight black tone-on-tone G circles.

3. Following the manufacturer's instructions, fuse all pieces in place. Set up your machine with a narrow, blanket stitch. Using black thread, sew around each shape.

4. Press foundation square gently from wrong side. Centering design, trim to 16-1/2" square including seam allowances to make an appliquéd block.

5. Using either coral, dark red, or light green tone-on-tone instead of turquoise tone-on-tone, repeat steps 2–4 to make four appliquéd blocks total.

Assemble Quilt Top and Finish Quilt

1. Alternating colors, sew together four coral tone-on-tone 2-1/2" squares and four red print 2-1/2" squares in a row to make a sashing strip (Sashing Strip Diagram). Press seams in one direction. The strip should be 2-1/2x16-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make 12 sashing strips total.

2. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, lay out appliquéd blocks, sashing strips, and light green tone-on-tone sashing squares in five rows. Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams toward sashing strips.

3. Join rows to make quilt center. Press seams in one direction. The quilt center should be 38-1/2" square including seam allowances.

4. Sew short black print border strips to opposite edges of quilt center. Add long black print border strips to remaining edges to complete quilt top. Press all seams toward border.

5. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste. Quilt as desired.

6. Bind with black tone-on-tone binding strips.
