Cut Fabrics
Cut pieces in the following order.
From gold batik, cut:
1-15-1/2" square, cutting it diagonally twice in an X for 4 setting triangles total
1-10-1/2" setting square
2-8" squares, cutting each in half diagonally for 4 corner triangles total
8-2-1/2x6-1/2" rectangles
2-4-7/8" squares, cutting each in half diagonally for 4 medium triangles total
14-2-7/8" squares, cutting each in half diagonally for 28 small triangles total
From assorted medium and dark batiks, cut:
40-4-1/8" squares, cutting each diagonally twice in an X for 160 small triangles total for inner border (Note: Grain line for these triangles differs from the small triangles cut next.)
32-2-7/8" squares, cutting each in half diagonally for 64 small triangles total for blocks
From dark brown batik, cut:
2-6-7/8" squares, cutting each in half diagonally for 4 large triangles total
4-2-7/8" squares, cutting each in half diagonally for 8 small triangles total
From dark green batik, cut:
5-4-1/2x42" strips for outer border
5-2-1/2x42" binding strips
4-6-1/4" squares
20-4-1/8" squares, cutting each diagonally twice in an X for 80 small triangles total
80-2-3/8" squares, cutting each in half diagonally for 160 extra-small triangles total {C}Download this Project
Assemble Triangle-Squares For Blocks
1. Sew together a gold batik small triangle and a medium or dark batik small triangle to make a gold triangle-square (Diagram 1). The triangle-square should be 2-1/2" square including seam allowances.
2. Repeat Step 1 to make 28 gold triangle-squares total.
3. Using two medium or dark batik small triangles, repeat Step 1 to make 12 medium/dark triangle-squares total (Diagram 2).
Assemble Blocks
1. Referring to Diagram 3, lay out seven gold triangle-squares, three medium/dark triangle-squares, and three assorted medium or dark batik small triangles in four rows. Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams in one direction, alternating direction with each row. Join rows to make a basket top. Press seams in one direction. Repeat to make four basket tops total.
2. Sew together a dark brown batik large triangle and a basket top to make a basket unit (Diagram 4). Press seam toward dark brown batik. The basket unit should be 8-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make four basket units total.
3. Referring to Diagram 5, sew a dark brown batik small triangle to one end of a gold batik 2-1/2x6-1/2" rectangle to make a basket side. Press seam toward triangle. Repeat with a second dark brown batik small triangle and a second gold batik 2-1/2x6-1/2" rectangle, sewing triangle to opposite end of rectangle, to make a mirror-image basket side (Diagram 5).
4. Join basket sides to adjacent edges of a basket unit (Diagram 6). Press seams toward basket sides. Sew a gold batik medium triangle to bottom edge of basket unit to make a Basket block. Press seam toward gold batik. The block should be 10-1/2" square including seam allowances.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to make four Basket blocks total.
Assemble Quilt Center
1. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, lay out blocks, gold batik setting square, and triangles in three diagonal rows.
2. Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams toward setting square and triangles. Join rows; press seams in one direction.
3. Add gold batik corner triangles to complete quilt center. Press seams toward corner triangles. The quilt center should be 28-3/4" square including seam allowances.
Assemble and Add Inner Border
For precise piecing of the border segments, you may prefer paper piecing instead of the traditional method. Click on "Download this Project" for the Border Paper-Piecing Pattern.
1. For one border segment, gather two matching medium or dark batik small triangles, one dark green batik small triangle, and two dark green batik extra-small triangles. Sew medium or dark batik small triangles to short edges of a dark green batik small triangle, offsetting points by 3/8" (Diagram 7). Press seams toward assorted batik triangles.
2. Join dark green batik extra-small triangles to ends of Step 1 unit to make a border segment (Diagram 8). Press seams toward dark green batik. If necessary, trim the extra-small triangles' dog-ears. The border segment should be 6-1/4" long including seam allowances.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to make 80 border segments total.
4. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, sew together 20 border segments to make an inner border strip. Press seams in one direction. The strip should be 6-1/4x28-3/4" including seam allowances. Repeat to make four inner border strips total.
5. Sew inner border strips to opposite edges of quilt center, noting direction of assorted print triangles. Press seams toward quilt center.
6. Join dark green batik 6-1/4" squares to ends of remaining inner border strips. Press seams toward squares. Add remaining inner border strips to remaining edges of quilt center, again noting direction of assorted print triangles. Press seams toward quilt center. The quilt center now should be 40-1/4" square including seam allowances.
Add Outer Border
1. Cut and piece dark green batik 4-1/2x42" strips to make:
2-4-1/2x48-1/4" outer border strips
2-4-1/2x40-1/4" outer border strips
2. Sew short outer border strips to opposite edges of quilt center. Add long outer border strips to remaining edges to complete quilt top. Press all seams toward outer border.
Finish Quilt
1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste. Quilt as desired.
2. Bind with dark green batik binding strips.
