Assemble Center Units

1. Referring to Diagram 1, sew together five matching red print 1-7/8" squares and four matching gray-blue print 1-7/8" squares in three rows. Press seams toward gray-blue print. Join rows to make a red-and-blue Nine-Patch unit. Press seams in one direction. The unit should be 4-5/8" square including seam allowances.

2. Repeat Step 1 to make nine red-and-blue Nine-Patch units total.

3. Using black floral instead of gray-blue print, repeat Step 1 to make four red-and-black Nine-Patch units total.

4. Sew matching red stripe or plaid 1-1/2x4-5/8" rectangles to opposite edges of a red-and-blue Nine-Patch unit (Diagram 2). Add matching 1-1/2x6-5/8" rectangles to remaining edges to make a red-and-blue center unit. Press all seams toward rectangles. Trim center unit to 6-1/2" square including seam allowances.

5. Repeat Step 4 to make nine red-and-blue center units total.

6. Using red-and-black Nine-Patch units, repeat Step 4 to make four red-and-black center units total.

Assemble Blocks

1. Referring to Diagram 3, sew matching cream print large triangles to two adjacent edges of a gray-blue floral 2-3/4" square to make a blue-and-cream triangle unit. Press seams toward square. Repeat to make a second, matching blue-and-cream triangle unit.

2. Using large triangles from the same cream print as in Step 1 and black star print 2-3/4" squares, repeat Step 1 to make two matching black-and-cream triangle units.

3. Sew blue-and-cream triangle units to opposite edges of a red-and-blue center unit (Diagram 4). Sew black-and-cream triangle units to remaining edges to make an A block. Press all seams toward center unit. The block should be 9-1/4" square including seam allowances.

4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 to make nine total of block A.

5. Using black print large triangles and white-and-red plaid 23/4" squares, repeat Step 1 to make 16 black-and-red triangle units.

6. Using four black-and-red triangle units and one red-and-black center unit, repeat Step 3 to make block B (Diagram 5). Repeat to make four total of block B.

5. Using four matching cream print small triangles, two gray-blue floral 2" squares, two black star print 2" squares, and one center unit, repeat Assemble Blocks, steps 1 through 3, to make a border block (Diagram 6). The block should be 61/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make six border blocks total.

6. Referring to photo on page 1, join a border block and a short outer border strip to make a short outer border unit. Press seams toward strip. Repeat to make a second short outer border unit. Sew short outer border units to short edges of quilt center, noting placement of blocks. Press seams toward border.
