Assemble Corner Units
Measurements include 1/4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions indicated by arrows on diagrams. If no direction is specified, press seam toward darker fabric.
Sew together a medium blue 1-1/4" square and a solid cream 1-1/4" square. Add a solid cream 1-1/4×2" rectangle to bottom edge to make a corner unit (Diagram 1). The corner unit should be 2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 16 corner units total.
Assemble Diagonal Units
1. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on wrong side of 64 solid cream 1-1/4" squares. (To prevent fabric from stretching as you draw lines, place 220-grit sandpaper under each square.)
2. Align a marked solid cream square with left-hand end of a light blue print 1-1/4×2" rectangle (Diagram 2; note direction of marked line). Sew on drawn line; trim excess fabric, leaving 1/4" seam allowance. Open attached triangle and press seam open.
3. Align a second marked solid cream square with right-hand end of Step 2 rectangle (Diagram 2; again note direction of marked line). Stitch, trim, and press as before to make a light blue diagonal unit. The diagonal unit should be 1-1/4×2" including seam allowances.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to make 16 light blue diagonal units total.
5. Using assorted dark blue print 1-1/4×2" rectangles and remaining marked solid cream squares, repeat steps 2 and 3, referring to Diagram 3 for orientation of marked diagonal lines, to make 16 dark blue diagonal units.
Assemble Blocks
1. Referring to Diagram 4, sew together a corner unit and a light blue diagonal unit to make Unit A. The unit should be 2×2-3/4" including seam allowances. Repeat to make 16 A units total.
2. Referring to Diagram 5, add a solid cream 1-1/4" square to one edge of a dark blue diagonal unit to make Unit B. The unit should be 1-1/4×2-3/4" including seam allowances. Repeat to make 16 B units total.
3. Referring to Diagram 6, sew together an A unit and a B unit to make a quarter block. The quarter block should be 2-3/4" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 16 quarter blocks total.
4. Sew together four quarter blocks in pairs (Diagram 7; note orientation of each quarter block). Join pairs to make a block. The block should be 5" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make four blocks total.
Assemble Sashing
Referring to Diagram 8, join solid cream 1-1/4" squares to opposite edges of an assorted medium blue print 1-1/4×3-1/2" rectangle to make a sashing rectangle. The sashing rectangle should be 1-1/4×5" including seam allowances. Repeat to make 12 sashing rectangles total.
Assemble Quilt Top
1. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, lay out remaining assorted medium blue print 1-1/4" squares, sashing rectangles, and blocks in five horizontal rows.
2. Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams toward sashing. Join rows to complete quilt top. Press seams open.
Finish Quilt
1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste.
2. Quilt as desired. Designer Sherri K. Falls machine-quilted stipples in the solid cream portions and left the blue print pieces unquilted.
3. Bind with solid black binding strips.
