Assemble Units

1. Sew a gray print small triangle to a short edge of a black tone-on-tone medium triangle (Diagram 1). Press seam toward small triangle. Add a second gray print small triangle to adjacent short edge of black tone-on-tone medium triangle to make a gray Flying Geese unit. Press as before. The unit should be 4-1/2x2-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make four gray Flying Geese units total.

5. Referring to Diagram 4, sew a black tone-on-tone small triangle to each end of a gold Flying Geese unit. Press seams toward Flying Geese unit. Then add a black tone-on-tone medium triangle to one long edge of the gold Flying Geese unit to make a pieced triangle. Press seam toward black tone-on-tone medium triangle. Repeat to make four pieced triangles total.

Assemble Quilt Center

1. Sew black tone-on-tone 2-1/2x16-1/2" strips to opposite edges of center star block (Quilt Assembly Diagram). Add black tone-on-tone 2-1/2x20-1/2" strips to remaining edges of center star block to make a bordered star block. Press all seams toward black tone-on-tone strips. The bordered star block should be 20-1/2" square including seam allowances.

3. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram for color pattern, join 12 gray, gold, blue, and brown tone-on-tone 2-1/2" squares to make a long pieced row. Press seams in one direction. Repeat to make a second long pieced row.

4. Add short pieced rows to opposite edges of bordered star block. Add long pieced rows to remaining edges to make quilt center. Press all seams toward bordered star block. The quilt center should be 24-1/2" square including seam allowances.

Assemble and Add Floating Star Border

1. For one olive green floating star block, gather eight olive green print 2" squares, four black tone-on-tone 3" squares, four black tone-on-tone 3x3-1/2" rectangles, and one blown floral 3-1/2" square.

2. Fold each olive green print 2" square in half diagonally with wrong side inside to make folded triangles. Aligning raw edges, place folded triangles in lower corners of a black tone-on-tone 3x3-1/2" rectangle (Diagram 8); baste to make an olive green star point unit. Repeat to make four olive green star point units total.
