Assemble Units

1. Sew a gray print small triangle to a short edge of a black tone-on-tone medium triangle (Diagram 1). Press seam toward small triangle. Add a second gray print small triangle to adjacent short edge of black tone-on-tone medium triangle to make a gray Flying Geese unit. Press as before. The unit should be 4-1/2x2-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make four gray Flying Geese units total.

2. Using gold print small triangles, repeat Step 1 to make four gold Flying Geese units.

3. Sew together a gold print small triangle and a black tone-on-tone small triangle to make a triangle-square (Diagram 2). Press seam toward black tone-on-tone. The triangle-square should be 2-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make eight triangle-squares total.

4. Referring to Diagram 3, sew together two triangle-squares and two black tone-on-tone 2-1/2" squares in pairs. Press seams toward black tone-on-tone. Join pairs to make a bow tie unit. Press seam in one direction. The unit should be 4-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make four bow tie units total.

5. Referring to Diagram 4, sew a black tone-on-tone small triangle to each end of a gold Flying Geese unit. Press seams toward Flying Geese unit. Then add a black tone-on-tone medium triangle to one long edge of the gold Flying Geese unit to make a pieced triangle. Press seam toward black tone-on-tone medium triangle. Repeat to make four pieced triangles total.

6. Referring to Diagram 5, sew olive green print large triangles to short edges of a pieced triangle to make a side unit. Press seams toward olive green print. The side unit should be 8-1/2x4-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make four side units total.

Assemble Center Star Block

1. Referring to Diagram 6, lay out four black tone-on-tone 2-1/2" squares, four gray Flying Geese units, and gray leaf print 4-1/2" square in three rows. Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams toward squares. Join rows to make a Sawtooth Star unit. Press seams in one direction. The unit should be 8-1/2" square including
seam allowances.

2. Lay out bow tie units, side units, and Sawtooth Star unit in three rows (Diagram 7). Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams toward side units. Join rows to make center star block. Press seams in one direction. The center star block should be 16-1/2" square including
seam allowances.

Assemble Quilt Center

1. Sew black tone-on-tone 2-1/2x16-1/2" strips to opposite edges of center star block (Quilt Assembly Diagram). Add black tone-on-tone 2-1/2x20-1/2" strips to remaining edges of center star block to make a bordered star block. Press all seams toward black tone-on-tone strips. The bordered star block should be 20-1/2" square including seam allowances.

2. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram for color pattern, sew together 10 gray, gold, blue, and brown tone-on-tone 2-1/2" squares to make a short pieced row. Press seams in one direction. Repeat to make a second short pieced row.

3. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram for color pattern, join 12 gray, gold, blue, and brown tone-on-tone 2-1/2" squares to make a long pieced row. Press seams in one direction. Repeat to make a second long
pieced row.

4. Add short pieced rows to opposite edges of bordered star block. Add long pieced rows to remaining edges to make quilt center. Press all seams toward bordered star block. The quilt center should be 24-1/2" square including seam allowances.

Assemble and Add Floating Star Border

1. For one olive green floating star block, gather eight olive green print 2" squares, four black tone-on-tone 3" squares, four black tone-on-tone 3x3-1/2" rectangles, and one blown floral 3-1/2" square.

2. Fold each olive green print 2" square in half diagonally with wrong side inside to make folded triangles. Aligning raw edges, place folded triangles in lower corners of a black tone-on-tone 3x3-1/2" rectangle (Diagram 8); baste to make an olive green star point unit. Repeat to make four olive green star point units total.

3. Referring to Diagram 9, lay out star point units and remaining pieces in three rows. Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams toward squares. Join rows to make an olive green floating star block. Press seams in one direction. The block should be 8-1/2" square including seam allowances.

4. Repeat steps 1–3 to make a second olive green floating star block.

5. Using blue print instead of olive green print and blue floral instead of brown floral, repeat steps 1–4 to make two blue floating star blocks.

7. Using gold print instead of olive green print and olive green floral instead of brown floral, repeat steps 1–4 to make two gold floating star blocks.

8. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, sew together one each of olive green, blue, and gold floating star blocks to make a floating star border strip. Press seams in one direction. The strip should be 24-1/2x8-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make a second floating star border strip.

9. Sew floating star border strips to short edges of quilt center. Press seams toward floating star border.
