Assemble A Blocks
Measurements include 1/4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions indicated by arrows on diagrams. If no direction is specified, press seam toward darker fabric.
1. Sew together a light blue print 1-1/2×42" strip and a dark blue print 1-1/2×42" strip to make Strip Set A (Diagram 1). Repeat to make a second A strip set. Cut strip sets into forty 1-1/2"-wide A segments.
2. Sew together a light blue print 1-1/2×42" strip and a dark blue print 2-1/2×42" strip to make Strip Set B (Diagram 2). Cut strip set into twenty 1-1/2"-wide B segments.
3. Referring to Diagram 3, sew together two A segments to make a Four-Patch unit. The unit should be 2-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 20 Four-Patch units total.
4. Referring to Diagram 4, join a dark blue print 1-1/2×2-1/2" rectangle to top edge of a Four-Patch unit. Add a B segment to left-hand edge to make a corner unit. The unit should be 3-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 20 corner units total.
5. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on wrong sides of dark blue print and orange small print 1-1/2" squares.
6. Align a marked dark blue print square with short edge of a pink print 1-1/2×3-1/2" rectangle (Diagram 5; note direction of marked line). Sew on marked line. Trim seam allowance to 1/4"; press open attached triangle. Add a marked orange small print square to remaining rectangle short edge to make Unit A. The unit still should be 1-1/2×3-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make 20 A units total.
7. Referring to Diagram 6 for direction of marked lines and pressing direction, repeat Step 6 to make 20 of Unit B.
8. Sew together a Unit A and a Unit B to make a side unit (Diagram 7). The unit should be 2-1/2×3-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make 20 side units total.
9. Referring to Diagram 8, lay out four corner units, four side units, and one orange large print 2-1/2" square in three rows. Sew together pieces in rows. Join rows to make Block A. The block should be 8-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make five A blocks total.
Assemble B Blocks
1. Sew together a dark blue print 1-1/2×42" strip and a purple small print 1-1/2×42" strip to make Strip Set C (Diagram 9). Repeat to make a second C strip set. Cut strip sets into thirty-two 1-1/2"-wide C segments.
2. Sew together a purple small print 1-1/2×42" strip and a dark blue print 2-1/2×42" strip to make Strip Set D (Diagram 10). Cut strip set into sixteen 1-1/2"-wide D segments.
3. Referring to Diagram 11, sew together two C segments to make a Four-Patch unit. The unit should be 2-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 16 Four-Patch units total.
4. Referring to Diagram 12, join a dark blue print 1-1/2×2-1/2" rectangle to top edge of a Four-Patch unit. Add a D segment to right-hand edge to make a corner unit. The unit should be 3-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 16 corner units total.
