Materials

Yardages and cutting instructions are based on 42" of usable fabric width.

  • 1/4 yard each light blue print, pink print, purple small print, and yellow print (blocks)
  • 7/8 yard dark blue print (blocks, border)
  • 1/8 yard orange small print (blocks)
  • 10" square each orange large print and purple large print (blocks)
  • 3/8 yard binding fabric
  • 1-1/8 yard backing fabric
  • 37"-square batting

Finished quilt: 28-1/2" square

Finished block: 8" square

Cut Fabrics

Cut pieces in the following order.

From light blue print, cut:

  • 3—1-1/2×42" strips

From dark blue print, cut:

  • 2—2-1/2×42" strips
  • 2—2-1/2×28-1/2" border strips
  • 2—2-1/2×24-1/2" border strips
  • 16—2-1/2×3-1/2" rectangles
  • 4—1-1/2×42" strips
  • 36—1-1/2×2-1/2" rectangles
  • 40—1-1/2" squares

From orange small print, cut:

  • 40—1-1/2" squares

From pink print, cut:

  • 40—1-1/2×3-1/2" rectangles

From orange large print, cut:

  • 5—2-1/2" squares

From purple small print, cut:

  • 3—1-1/2×42" strips

From yellow print, cut:

  • 32—1-1/2" squares

From purple large print, cut:

  • 4—2-1/2" squares

From binding fabric, cut:

  • 4—2-1/2×42" binding strips

Assemble A Blocks

Measurements include 1/4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

Press seams in directions indicated by arrows on diagrams. If no direction is specified, press seam toward darker fabric.

1. Sew together a light blue print 1-1/2×42" strip and a dark blue print 1-1/2×42" strip to make Strip Set A (Diagram 1). Repeat to make a second A strip set. Cut strip sets into forty 1-1/2"-wide A segments.

2. Sew together a light blue print 1-1/2×42" strip and a dark blue print 2-1/2×42" strip to make Strip Set B (Diagram 2). Cut strip set into twenty 1-1/2"-wide B segments.

3. Referring to Diagram 3, sew together two A segments to make a Four-Patch unit. The unit should be 2-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 20 Four-Patch units total.

4. Referring to Diagram 4, join a dark blue print 1-1/2×2-1/2" rectangle to top edge of a Four-Patch unit. Add a B segment to left-hand edge to make a corner unit. The unit should be 3-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 20 corner units total.

5. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on wrong sides of dark blue print and orange small print 1-1/2" squares.

6. Align a marked dark blue print square with short edge of a pink print 1-1/2×3-1/2" rectangle (Diagram 5; note direction of marked line). Sew on marked line. Trim seam allowance to 1/4"; press open attached triangle. Add a marked orange small print square to remaining rectangle short edge to make Unit A. The unit still should be 1-1/2×3-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make 20 A units total.

7. Referring to Diagram 6 for direction of marked lines and pressing direction, repeat Step 6 to make 20 of Unit B.

8. Sew together a Unit A and a Unit B to make a side unit (Diagram 7). The unit should be 2-1/2×3-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make 20 side units total.

9. Referring to Diagram 8, lay out four corner units, four side units, and one orange large print 2-1/2" square in three rows. Sew together pieces in rows. Join rows to make Block A. The block should be 8-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make five A blocks total.

Assemble B Blocks

1. Sew together a dark blue print 1-1/2×42" strip and a purple small print 1-1/2×42" strip to make Strip Set C (Diagram 9). Repeat to make a second C strip set. Cut strip sets into thirty-two 1-1/2"-wide C segments.

2. Sew together a purple small print 1-1/2×42" strip and a dark blue print 2-1/2×42" strip to make Strip Set D (Diagram 10). Cut strip set into sixteen 1-1/2"-wide D segments.

3. Referring to Diagram 11, sew together two C segments to make a Four-Patch unit. The unit should be 2-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 16 Four-Patch units total.

4. Referring to Diagram 12, join a dark blue print 1-1/2×2-1/2" rectangle to top edge of a Four-Patch unit. Add a D segment to right-hand edge to make a corner unit. The unit should be 3-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 16 corner units total.

5. Mark a diagonal line on wrong side of each yellow print 1-1/2" square.

6. Align a marked yellow print square with bottom left-hand corner of a dark blue print 2-1/2×3-1/2" rectangle (Diagram 13; note direction of marked line). Sew on marked line. Trim seam allowance to 1/4"; press open attached triangle. Add a marked yellow print square to bottom right-hand corner of rectangle to make Unit C. The unit still should be 2-1/2×3-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make 16 C units total.

7. Lay out four corner units, four C units, and one purple large print 2-1/2" square in three rows (Diagram 14; note orientation of corner units). Sew together pieces in rows. Join rows to make Block B. The block should be 8-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make four B blocks total.

Assemble Quilt Center

1. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, alternate blocks in three rows. Sew together blocks in rows. Press seams toward B blocks.

2. Join rows to make quilt center; press seams in one direction. The quilt center should be 24-1/2" square including seam allowances.

3. Sew dark blue print 2-1/2×24-1/2" border strips to opposite edges of quilt center. Add dark blue print 2-1/2×28-1/2" border strips to remaining edges to complete quilt top. Press all seams toward border.

Finish Quilt

1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste. Quilt as desired.

2. Bind with binding strips.
