Cut pieces in the following order.
From assorted dark prints, cut:
- 12--5-1/4" squares
- 28--4-3/4x7" rectangles for outer border
- 24--2-1/2x4-1/2" rectangles
- 48--2-1/2" squares

- 48--2-1/2" squares
From dark blue tone-on-tone, cut:

Assemble Flying Geese Units
1. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on wrong side of each assorted dark print and cream print 2-1/2" square.
2. Align a marked dark print 2-1/2" square with one end of a cream print 2-1/2x4-1/2" rectangle (Diagram 1; note direction of drawn line). Sew on marked line; trim seam allowance to 1/4". Press open attached triangle. Align a marked dark print 2-1/2" square with opposite end of Step 2 rectangle (Diagram 1; again note direction of marked line). Stitch, trim, and press as before to make a light Flying Geese unit. The unit should be 4-1/2x2-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make 24 light Flying Geese units total.
3. Using marked cream 2-1/2" squares and dark print 2-1/2x4-1/2" rectangles, repeat Step 2 to make 24 dark Flying Geese units (Diagram 2).
Assemble Hourglass Units
1. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on wrong side of each cream print 5-1/4" square.
2. Layer a marked cream print 5-1/4" square atop a dark print 5-1/4" square. Sew together with two seams, stitching 1/4" on each side of drawn line (Diagram 3). Cut joined squares apart on drawn line to make two triangle units. Press each triangle unit open, pressing seam toward dark print, to make two triangle-squares. Each should be 4-7/8" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 24 triangle-squares total.
3. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line perpendicular to the seam line on wrong side of 12 triangle-squares.
4. Layer a marked triangle-square atop an unmarked triangle-square, placing cream print triangle atop dark print triangle (Diagram 4).
5. Sew pair together with two seams, stitching 1/4" on each side of drawn line. Cut apart on drawn line to make two hourglass units (Diagram 4). Press each unit open, pressing seam in one direction. Each hourglass unit should be 4-1/2" square including seam allowances.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to make 24 hourglass units total.
Assemble Blocks
1. Sew together two light Flying Geese units to make a light Flying Geese pair (Diagram 5). Press seam in one direction. The Flying Geese pair should be 4-1/2" square including seam allowances.
2. Repeat Step 1 to make 12 light Flying Geese pairs total. So seams will abut in finished block, press seams toward top of six Flying Geese pairs and toward bottom of six pairs (Diagram 6).
3. Using dark Flying Geese units, repeat steps 1 and 2 to make and press 12 dark Flying Geese pairs (Diagram 7).
4. Referring to Diagram 8, lay out eight hourglass units, four light Flying Geese pairs, and four dark Flying Geese pairs in four rows (note direction of black arrows for placement of pairs). Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams in directions indicated by red arrows in diagram. Join rows to make a block; press seams in one direction. The block should be 16-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make three blocks total.
Assemble Quilt Center
Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, lay out blocks in a row. Join blocks to make quilt center. Press seams in one direction. The quilt center should be 16-1/2x48-1/2" including seam allowances.
Assemble and Add Border
1. Cut assorted dark print 4-3/4x7" rectangles into lengths ranging from 5-1/2" to 6-1/2", then piece rectangles and trim lengths to make:
- 2--4-3/4x48-1/2" border strips
- 2--4-3/4x25" border strips
2. Sew long border strips to long edges of quilt center. Add short border strips to remaining edges to complete table runner top. Press all seams toward border.
Finish Quilt
1. Layer table runner top, batting, and backing; baste. Quilt as desired.
2. Bind with dark blue tone-on-tone binding strips.
