Materials

  • 1⁄8 yard light green polka dot (blocks)
  • 1⁄8 yard light pink polka dot (blocks, sashing, border)
  • 5⁄8 yard green damask (blocks, sashing, border)
  • 1⁄3 yard pink damask (blocks, sashing, border)
  • 1⁄2 yard black polka dot (blocks, sashing, border)
  • 1⁄4 yard multicolor floral (block centers)
  • 1⁄3 yard pink toile (blocks)
  • 1⁄2 yard black floral (border)
  • 1-1⁄2 yards backing fabric
  • 27x51" batting

Finished quilt: 18-1⁄2x42-1⁄2"

Finished block: 9" square

Yardages and cutting instructions are based on 42" of useable fabric width. Measurements include 1⁄4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

Cut Fabrics

Cut pieces in the following order.

From light green polka dot, cut:

  • 8--2" squares

From light pink polka dot, cut:

  • 20--2" squares

From green damask, cut:

  • 4--2-1⁄2x42" binding strips
  • 24--3-1⁄2" squares

From pink damask, cut:

  • 20--3-1⁄2" squares

From black polka dot, cut:

  • 6--2x9-1⁄2" strips
  • 6--2x6-1⁄2" strips
  • 16--2" squares

From multicolor floral, cut:

  • 3--6-1⁄2" squares

From pink toile, cut:

  • 6--2x12-1⁄2" strips
  • 6--2x9-1⁄2" strips

From black floral, cut:

  • 8--3-1⁄2x12-1⁄2" rectangles

Mark Squares

Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on wrong side of all light green polka dot 2" squares, all light pink polka dot 2" squares, all green damask 3-1⁄2" squares, 16 pink damask 3-1⁄2" squares, and all black polka dot 2" squares.

Assemble Blocks

1. Align a marked light green polka dot 2" square with each corner of a multicolor floral 6-1⁄2" square (Diagram 1; note directions of marked lines). Sew on marked lines. Trim excess, leaving 1⁄4" seam allowances. Press open attached triangles to make green block center. The block center should still be 6-1⁄2" square including seam allowances.

2. Repeat Step 1 to make a second green block center.

3. Using marked light pink polka dot 2" squares and remaining multicolor floral 6-1⁄2" square, repeat Step 1 to make a pink block center (Diagram 2).

4. Sew black polka dot 2x6-1⁄2" strips to opposite edges of a green block center (Diagram 3). Add black polka dot 2x9-1⁄2" strips to remaining edges. Press all seams toward black polka dot strips.

5. Align a marked green damask 3-1⁄2" square with each corner of Step 4 unit (Diagram 3; note directions of marked lines). Sew on marked lines. Trim excess, leaving 1⁄4" seam allowances. Press open attached triangles to make a green block (Diagram 4). The block should be 9-1⁄2" square including seam allowances.

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to make a second green block.

7. Using remaining black polka dot 2x6-1⁄2" and 2x9-1⁄2" strips, pink block center, and marked pink damask 3-1⁄2" squares, repeat steps 4 and 5 to make a pink block (Diagram 5).

Add Sashing

1. Sew pink toile 2x9-1⁄2" strips to opposite edges of a green block. Add pink toile 2x12-1⁄2" strips to remaining edges. Press all seams toward pink toile strips. Align a marked pink damask 3-1⁄2" square with each corner of block (Diagram 6; note directions of marked lines). Sew on marked lines. Trim excess, leaving 1⁄4" seam allowances. Press open attached triangles, pressing seam toward pink damask.

2. Align a marked black polka dot 2" square with each corner of Step 1 block. Stitch, trim, and press as before, pressing seams toward black polka dot, to make a sashed green block (Diagram 7). The sashed green block should be 12-1⁄2" square including seam allowances.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to make a second sashed green block.

4. Using pink block, remaining pink toile 2x9-1⁄2" and 2x12-1⁄2" strips, four marked green damask 3-1⁄2" squares, and four marked light pink polka dot 2" squares, repeat steps 1 and 2 to make a sashed pink block, pressing seams away from green damask and light pink polka dot squares (middle block in Quilt Assembly Diagram).

Assemble Border Units

1. Referring to Diagram 8, align a marked green damask 3-1⁄2" square with each end of a black floral 3-1⁄2x12-1⁄2" rectangle. Stitch, trim, and press as before, pressing seams away from green damask. Align marked light pink polka dot 2" squares with green corners. Stitch, trim, and press as before, pressing seams away from light pink polka dot, to make a green border rectangle. The green border rectangle should still be 3-1⁄2x12-1⁄2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make six green border rectangles total.

2. Using marked pink damask 3-1⁄2" squares, marked black polka dot 2" squares, and remaining black floral 3-1⁄2x12-1⁄2" rectangles, repeat Step 1 to make two pink border rectangles, pressing seams toward pink damask 3-1⁄2" squares and black polka dot 2" squares.

3. Align a marked black polka dot 2" square with one corner of an unmarked pink damask 3-1⁄2" square (Diagram 9; note direction of marked line). Stitch, trim, and press as before to make a border square; press seam toward black polka dot. The border square should still be 3-1⁄2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make four border squares total.

Assemble Quilt Top

Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, lay out border squares, border rectangles, and sashed blocks in five vertical rows. Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams in one direction, alternating direction with each row. Join rows to complete quilt top; press seams in one direction.

Finish Quilt

1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste. Quilt as desired. Referring to Diagram 10, trim corner units diagonally.

2. Bind with green damask binding strips.
