Materials

Yardages and cutting instructions are based on 42" of usable fabric width.

  • 1/2 yard total assorted white prints (blocks)
  • 10" square each orange star print, black star print, orange candy corn print, gray print, light orange print, and medium orange print (blocks)
  • 9×21" piece (fat eighth) each black candy corn print and mottled dark orange (blocks)
  • 5/8 yard black floral (blocks, outer border)
  • 1/4 yard mottled black (inner border)
  • 3/8 yard orange floral (binding)
  • 1-1/3 yards backing fabric
  • 31x47" batting

Cut Fabrics 

Cut pieces in the following order. 

If you prefer to make triangle-squares larger than necessary and trim them to size, cut 3" squares instead of the 2-7/8" squares specified here.

From assorted white prints, cut:

  • 36—2-7/8" squares

From orange star print, cut:

  • 8—2-7/8" squares

From black star print, cut:

  • 4—2-7/8" squares

From orange candy corn print, cut:

  • 6—2-7/8" squares

From black candy corn print, cut:

  • 12—2-1/2" squares

From black floral, cut:

  • 20—2-7/8" squares
  • 2—2-1/2×34-1/2" outer border strips
  • 2—2-1/2×22-1/2" outer border strips 
  • 4—2-1/2" squares

From gray print, cut:

  • 8—2-7/8" squares

From light orange print, cut:

  • 8—2-7/8" squares

From medium orange print, cut:

  • 6—2-7/8" squares

From mottled dark orange, cut:

  • 16—2-1/2" squares

From mottled black, cut:

  • 2—1-1/2×32-1/2" inner border strips
  • 2—1-1/2×18-1/2" inner border strips

From orange floral, cut:

  • 4—2-1/2×42" binding strips

Assemble Blocks

Measurements include 1/4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

Press seams in directions indicated by arrows on diagrams. If no direction is specified, press seam toward darker fabric. 

1. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on wrong side of each assorted white print 2-7/8" square, each orange star print 2-7/8" square, and each black star print 2-7/8" square.

2. Layer a marked white square atop an orange candy corn 2-7/8" square. Sew together with two seams, stitching 1/4" on each side of marked line (Diagram 1). Cut apart on marked line. Press open to make two triangle-squares. Each triangle-square should be 2-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 12 white-and-orange-candy-corn triangle-squares total.

3. Repeat Step 2 using remaining marked and unmarked 2-7/8" squares to make triangle-squares in the following combinations. Press seams toward darker fabric.

  • 40 white print and black floral
  • 16 orange star print and gray print
  • 8 black star print and light orange print
  • 12 white print and medium orange print
  • 8 light orange print and white print

4. Referring to Diagram 2, lay out the following pieces in four rows. Sew together pieces in rows. Join rows to make Block A. The block should be 8-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make four A blocks total.

  • 3 white-and-orange-candy-corn triangle-squares
  • 6 white-and-black-floral triangle-squares 
  • 2 black candy corn 2-1/2" squares
  • 2 mottled dark orange 2-1/2" squares
  • 2 orange-star-and-gray triangle-squares
  • 1 black-star-and-light-orange triangle-square

5. Referring to Diagram 3, lay out the following pieces in four rows. Sew together pieces in rows. Join rows to make Block B. The block should be 8-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make two B blocks total.

  • 1 black candy corn 2-1/2" square
  • 4 white-and-black-floral triangle-squares
  • 3 white-and-medium-orange triangle-squares
  • 2 mottled dark orange 2-1/2" squares
  • 2 orange-star-and-gray triangle-squares
  • 2 light-orange-and-white triangle-squares
  • 1 black-star-and-light-orange triangle-square
  • 1 black floral 2-1/2" square

6. Referring to Diagram 4, lay out the following pieces in four rows. Sew together pieces in rows. Join rows to make Block C. The block should be 8-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make two C blocks total.

  • 3 white-and-medium-orange triangle-squares
  • 4 white-and-black-floral triangle-squares
  • 1 black candy corn 2-1/2" square
  • 2 mottled dark orange 2-1/2" squares
  • 2 light-orange-and-white triangle-squares
  • 2 orange-star-and-gray triangle-squares
  • 1 black floral 2-1/2" square
  • 1 black-star-and-light-orange triangle-square

Assemble Table Runner Top

1. Referring to Table Runner Assembly Diagram, arrange blocks in two rows. Sew together blocks in rows. Press seams in opposite directions.

2. Join rows to make table runner center. Press seams in one direction. The table runner center should be 16-1/2×32-1/2" including seam allowances.

3. Sew mottled black 1-1/2×32-1/2" inner border strips to long edges of table runner center (Table Runner Assembly Diagram). Add mottled black 1-1/2×18-1/2" inner border strips to remaining edges of table runner center. Press seams toward inner border. The table runner center now should be 18-1/2×34-1/2" including seam allowances.

4. Sew black floral 2-1/2×34-1/2" outer border strips to long edges of table runner center (Table Runner Assembly Diagram). Add black floral 2-1/2×22-1/2" outer border strips to remaining edges of table runner center. Press seams toward outer border to complete table runner top.

Finish Table Runner

1. Layer table runner top, batting, and backing; baste. Quilt as desired.

2. Bind with orange floral binding strips.
