  • 1/2 yard light green print (sashing)
  • 1 yard total assorted cream prints (appliqué foundations)
  • 2—12" squares assorted white tone-on-tones (appliqués)
  • 1/4 yard total assorted purple prints (appliqués)
  • 1/4 yard total assorted orange prints (appliqués)
  • 1/4 yard total assorted yellow prints (appliqués)
  • 1/4 yard total assorted pink prints (appliqués)
  • 1/4 yard total assorted teal prints (appliqués)
  • 7/8 yard total assorted green prints (border)
  • 1/2 yard medium green print (binding)
  • 1-3/4 yards backing fabric
  • 27×71" batting
  • Lightweight iron-on fusible web
  • Permanent, fine-tip marking pen: black

Cut Fabrics

Cut pieces in the following order.

Click on "Download this Project" above for pattern pieces. To use fusible web for appliquéing, complete the following steps.

1. Lay fusible web, paper side up, over patterns. Use a pencil to trace each pattern the number of times indicated in cutting instructions, leaving 1/2" between tracings. Cut out each fusible-web shape roughly 1/4" outside traced lines.

2. Following manufacturer's instructions, press fusible-web shapes onto wrong sides of designated fabrics; let cool. Cut out fabric shapes on drawn lines. Peel off paper backings.

From light green print, cut:

  • 3—1-1/2×42" strips for sashing
  • 6—1-1/2×10-1/2" sashing strips

From assorted cream prints, cut:

  • 5—10-1/2" squares

From each white tone-on-tone 10" square, cut:

  • 1 each of patterns B, D, and F

From assorted purple prints, cut:

  • 1 of Pattern A
  • One set of 2 Pattern C and 1 Pattern E
  • 8 of Pattern M

From assorted orange prints, cut:

  • 1 each of patterns A and L
  • 1 of Pattern K
  • One set of 3 Pattern G
  • 7 of Pattern M
  • One set of 5 Pattern O and 5 Pattern P

From assorted yellow prints, cut:

  • 1 of Pattern A
  • One set of 2 Pattern H, 1 Pattern I, and 1 Pattern J
  • 3 of Pattern M
  • One set of 5 Pattern N

From assorted pink prints, cut:

  • 1 of Pattern A
  • One set of 2 Pattern C and 1 Pattern E
  • 8 of Pattern M

From assorted teal prints, cut:

  • 1 of Pattern A
  • One set of 3 Pattern G and 1 Pattern I
  • One set of 2 Pattern H and 1 Pattern J
  • 7 of Pattern M

From assorted green prints, cut:

  • 38—4-1/2" squares

From medium green print, cut:

  • 5—2-1/2×42" binding strips

Assemble Quilt Center

Measurements include 1/4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

1. Cut and piece light green print 1-1/2×42" strips to make:

  • 2—1-1/2×56-1/2" sashing strips

2. Lay out assorted cream print 10-1/2" squares and light green print 1-1/2×10-1/2" and 1-1/2×56-1/2" sashing strips in three rows (Quilt Center Assembly Diagram).

3. Join squares and sashing strips in middle row. Press seams toward sashing strips. Add remaining sashing strips to long edges to make quilt center. Press seams toward sashing strips. The quilt center should be 12-1/2×56-1/2" including seam allowances.

Appliqué Quilt Center

1. Referring to Appliqué Placement Diagram, position assorted print and white tone-on-tone A–L pieces atop quilt center. Be sure to keep A pieces at least 1/2" from quilt center long edges. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse all pieces in place.

2. Using threads that match the appliqué pieces, machine-zigzag-stitch around appliqué edges.

Appliqué Blocks

1. Center a purple, orange, yellow, pink, or teal print M appliqué atop a green print 4-1/2" square (Block A Appliqué Diagram). Fuse in place to make a Block A. Repeat to make 33 A blocks total.

2. Place a yellow print N body piece atop a remaining green print 4-1/2" square (Block B Appliqué Diagram). Position orange print O beak piece and P leg piece, tucking top of leg piece under body. Fuse all pieces in place. Using a fine-tip permanent marker, add eyes on N body to make a Block B. Repeat to make five B blocks total.

3. Using threads that match the appliqué pieces, machine-zigzag-stitch around appliqué edges in A and B blocks.

Assemble and Add Border

1. Referring to Table Runner Assembly Diagram, sew together 12 A blocks and two B blocks to make a long border strip, noting orientation of B blocks. Press seams in one direction. The long border strip should be 4-1/2×56-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make a second long border strip.

2. Sew together five A blocks to make a short left-hand border strip. Join remaining A blocks and B block to make a short right-hand border strip, noting orientation of B block. Press all seams in one direction. Each short border strip should be 4-1/2×20-1/2" including seam allowances.

3. Sew a long border strip to each long edge of quilt center, noting orientation of B blocks. Join short border strips to remaining edges to complete quilt top. Press all seams toward quilt center.

Finish Quilt

1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste.

2. Quilt as desired. Diane Minkley machine-quilted various-size ovals across the quilt top.

3. Bind with medium green print binding strips.
