Assemble 16-Patch Mug Rugs

Measurements include 1⁄4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

Press seams in directions indicated by arrows on diagrams. If no direction is specified, press seam toward darker fabric.

1. Referring to Diagram 1, sew together two multicolor print 1-1/2" squares and two pink print 1-1/2" squares in pairs. Join pairs to make a Four-Patch unit. The unit should be 2 -1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make four pink Four-Patch units total.

2. Referring to Diagram 2, sew together pink Four-Patch units in pairs. Join pairs to make a pink 16-Patch block.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 using multicolor print and blue print 1 -1/2" squares to make a blue 16-Patch block.

4. Sew multicolor stripe 1 -1/2×4 -1/2" border strips to opposite edges of pink 16-Patch block (Diagram 3). Add multicolor stripe 1-1/2×6-1/2" border strips to remaining edges to complete pink mug rug top. Press all seams toward border strips.

5. Referring to Diagram 4, repeat Step 4 using blue 16-Patch block and remaining multicolor stripe border strips to complete blue mug rug top.

6. Layer each mug rug top with batting and backing; baste.

7. Quilt as desired. Project tester Diane Tomlinson machine-quilted a diagonal grid, creating an X in the center of each pink or blue square.

8. Bind the pink mug rug with a blue print binding strip and the blue mug rug with a pink print binding strip.

Assemble Broken Dishes Mug Rugs

1. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on wrong side of each pink print 1 -7/8" square and four blue print 1-7/8" squares.

2. Layer a marked pink print square atop a multicolor print 1 -7/8" square. Sew together with two seams, stitching 1⁄4" on each side of marked line (Diagram 5). Cut pair apart on drawn line; press open to make two pink-and-multicolor triangle-squares. Each triangle-square should be 1-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make eight pink-and-multicolor triangle-squares total.

3. Repeat Step 2 using remaining marked pink print and unmarked blue print 1-1/2" squares to make 16 pink-and-blue triangle-squares total.

4. Repeat Step 2 using marked blue print and remaining multicolor print 1-1/2" squares to make eight blue-and-multicolor triangle-squares total.

5. Referring to Diagram 6 for orientation of triangles, sew together two pink-and-multicolor triangle-squares and two pink-and-blue triangle-squares in pairs. Join pairs to make a pink block unit. The unit should be 2 -1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make four pink block units total.

6. Referring to Diagram 7, sew together pink block units in pairs. Join pairs to make a pink Broken Dishes block. The block should be 4-1/2" square including seam allowances.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 using blue-and-multicolor triangle-squares and remaining pink-and-blue triangle-squares to make a blue Broken Dishes block.

8. Sew blue print 1 -1/2×4 -1/2" border strips to opposite edges of pink Broken Dishes block (Diagram 8). Add blue print 1 -1/2×6 -1/2" border strips to remaining edges to complete pink mug rug top. Press all seams toward border strips.

9. Referring to Diagram 9, repeat Step 8 using blue Broken Dishes block and pink print border strips to complete blue mug rug top.
