Cut fabrics
To make the best use of your fabrics, cut pieces in the order that follows.
From tan print, cut:
- 140 -- 2x3-1/2" rectangles
- 140 -- 2-3/8" squares
From cream print, cut:
- 2 -- 3-1/2x42" strips
- 4 -- 2x42" strips
- 36 -- 3-7/8" squares, cutting each in half diagonally for 72 triangles total
- 70 -- 2-3/8" squares
From blue print, cut:
- 140 -- 2-3/8" squares
From red print, cut:
- 4 -- 2x42" strips
- 70 -- 2-3/8" squares
From black floral, cut:
- 22 -- 4-3/4" squares centered diagonally over a flower sprig
From purple print, cut:
- 2 -- 3-1/2x42" strips
- 6 -- 1-1/2x42" strips for border
- 8 -- 3-7/8" squares, cutting each in half diagonally for 16 triangles total
- 24 -- 1-1/2" sashing squares
From black print, cut:
- 7 -- 3-1/2x42" strips for border
- 6 -- 2-1/2x42" strips for border
- 8 -- 2-1/2x42" binding strips
- 58 -- 1-1/2x9-1/2" sashing rectangles
Assemble Triangle-Squares and Side Units
1. Mark a diagonal line on wrong side of each tan print and cream print 2-3/8" square.
2. Layer a marked tan print 2-3/8" square atop each blue print 2-3/8" square. Sew each pair together with two seams, stitching 1/4" on either side of drawn line (Diagram 1).
3. Cut each pair apart on drawn line to make two triangle units. Press each triangle unit open, pressing seam toward blue print, to make 280 blue triangle-squares total. Each triangle-square should be 2" square including seam allowances.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with marked cream print 2-3/8" squares and red print 2-3/8" squares to make 140 red triangle-squares.
5. Sew a blue triangle-square to each end of a tan print 2x3-1/2" rectangle to make a side unit (Diagram 2). Press seams toward rectangle. The side unit should be 2x6-1/2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make 140 side units total.
Assemble Square-in-a-Square Blocks
1. Sew cream print triangles to opposite edges of black floral 4-3/4" square (Diagram 3). Press seams toward black floral square. Add cream print triangles to remaining edges to make a Square-in-a-Square unit; press as before. Repeat to make 18 Square-in-a-Square units total.
2. Sew together a Square-in-a-Square unit, four side units, and four red triangle-squares in three rows (Diagram 4). Press seams toward side units. Join rows to make a Square-in-a-Square block. Press seams in one direction. The block should be 9-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 18 Square-in-a-Square blocks total.
Assemble Nine-Patch Blocks
1. Referring to Diagram 5, sew together two red print 2x42" strips and a cream print 3-1/2x42" strip to make strip set A. Press seams toward red strips. Repeat to make a second strip set A. Cut A strip sets into a total of thirty-four 2"-wide A segments.
2. Aligning long edges, sew together two cream print 2x42" strips and a purple print 3-1/2x42" strip to make strip set B (Diagram 6). Press seams toward purple strip. Repeat to make a second strip set B. Cut B strip sets into seventeen 3-1/2"-wide B segments.
3. Join two A segments and a B segment to make a Nine-Patch unit (Diagram 7). Press seams toward A segments. The unit should be 6-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 17 Nine-Patch units total.
4. Sew together four red triangle-squares, four side units, and a Nine-Patch unit in three rows (Diagram 8). Press seams toward side units. Join rows to make a Nine-Patch block. Press seams in one direction. The block should be 9-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 17 Nine-Patch blocks total.
Assemble Quilt Center
1. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, lay out 18 Square-in-a-Square blocks,
17 Nine-Patch blocks, 58 black print 1-1/2x9-1/2" sashing rectangles, and 24 purple print 1-1/2" sashing squares in 13 horizontal rows.
2. Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams toward sashing rectangles. Join rows to make quilt center. Press seams toward sashing rows. The quilt center should be 49-1/2x69-1/2" including seam allowances.
Assemble and Add Border
1. Cut and piece black print 2-1/2x42" strips to make:
- 2 -- 2-1/2x69-1/2" inner border strips
- 2 -- 2-1/2x49-1/2" inner border strips
2. Cut and piece purple print 1-1/2x42" strips to make:
- 2 -- 1-1/2x69-1/2" middle border strips
- 2 -- 1-1/2x49-1/2" middle border strips
3. Cut and piece black print 3-1/2x42" strips to make:
- 2 -- 3-1/2x69-1/2" outer border strips
- 2 -- 3-1/2x49-1/2" outer border strips
4. Aligning long edges, sew together a long inner border strip, long middle border strip, and long outer border strip to make a long border unit. Press seams toward black print strips. Repeat to make a second long border unit.
5. Using short border strips, repeat Step 4 to make two short border units.
6. Referring to Assemble Square-in-a-Square blocks, Step 1, use purple print triangles and remaining black floral 4-1/2" squares to make four border Square-in-a-Square units. Sew a border Square-in-a-Square unit to ends of each short border unit; press seams toward border units.
7. Sew long border units to sides of quilt center. Add pieced short border units to remaining edges to complete quilt top. Press all seams toward border units.
Finish Quilt
1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing.
2. Quilt as desired. With variegated thread, designer Toby Lischko machine-quilted wavy lines in the sashing and purple print border strips and stippled in the black print border strips (Quilting Diagram). She echo-quilted around the fussy-cut flowers and outline-quilted 1/4" inside the purple, blue, and red print block pieces.
3. Bind with black print binding strips.
