Precut strips make up the simplified blocks in a throw-size version of Mixed Berries. Two borders in different batiks round out the throw. Fabrics are from the Plum Pudding Bali Pops collection by Hoffman California Fabrics.

Cut Fabrics

Cut pieces in the following order.

From lilac batik, cut:
18-2-1⁄2" squares

From assorted purple and dark purple batiks, cut:
72-2-1⁄2x10-1⁄2" rectangles
36-2-1⁄2x4-1⁄2" rectangles (18 sets of 2 matching rectangles)

From a single dark purple batik, cut:
18-2-1⁄2" squares

From assorted lilac and purple batiks, cut:
72-2-1⁄2x10-1⁄2" rectangles
36-2-1⁄2x4-1⁄2" rectangles (18 sets of 2 matching rectangles)

From violet batik, cut:
7-2-1⁄2x42" strips for inner border

From a single purple batik, cut:
8-5x42" strips for outer border
8-2-1⁄2x42" binding strips

Assemble Blocks

1. Join a lilac batik 2-1⁄2" square and two matching purple or dark purple batik 2-1⁄2x4-1⁄2" rectangles to make a dark center rectangle unit (Diagram 1). Press seams toward lilac square The unit should be 2-1⁄2x10-1⁄2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make 18 dark center rectangle units total.

2. Referring to Diagram 2, lay out four assorted purple and dark purple batik 2-1⁄2x10-1⁄2" rectangles and one dark center rectangle unit in horizontal rows. Join rows to make a dark block. Press seams toward assorted purple and dark purple batik rectangles. The dark block should be 10-1⁄2" square including seam allowances.

3. Repeat Step 2 to make 18 dark blocks total.

4. Using purple batik 2-1⁄2" squares and assorted lilac and dark purple batik 2-1⁄2x4-1⁄2" rectangle sets, repeat Step 1 to make 18 light center rectangle units total.

5. Using assorted lilac and purple 2-1⁄2x10-1⁄2" rectangles and light center rectangle units, repeat Step 2 to make 18 light blocks total.

Assemble Quilt Center

1. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, alternate blocks in six horizontal rows, rotating blocks 90 degrees as shown.

2. Sew together blocks in each row. Press seams in one direction, alternating direction with each row. Join rows to make quilt center. Press seams in one direction. The quilt center should be 60-1⁄2" square including seam allowances.

Assemble and Add Borders

1. Cut and piece violet batik 2-1⁄2x42" strips to make:
2-2-1⁄2x64-1⁄2" inner border strips
2-2-1⁄2x60-1⁄2" inner border strips

2. Join short inner border strips to opposite edges of quilt center. Add remaining inner border strips to remaining edges. Press all seams toward inner border.

3. Cut and piece purple batik 5x42" strips to make:
2-5x73-1⁄2" outer border strips
2-2-1⁄2x64-1⁄2" outer border strips

4. Join short outer border strips to opposite edges of quilt center. Add remaining outer border strips to remaining edges. Press all seams toward outer border.

1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste. Quilt as desired.

2. Bind with purple batik binding strips.
