1-1/4 yards mottled navy blue (blocks)
2-1/8 yards total assorted red, green, brown, white, and navy blue prints (blocks)
3/8 yard green floral (inner border)
1/4 yard mottled red (middle border)
1-1/3 yards blue floral (outer border, binding)
3-2/3 yards backing fabric

Cut Fabrics

Cut pieces in the following order.

From hand-dyed green, cut:
72-2-1/2" squares

From mottled navy blue, cut:
72-4-1/2" squares

From assorted red, green, brown, white, and navy blue prints, cut:
360-2-1/2" squares

From green floral, cut:
5-2x42" strips for inner border

From mottled red, cut:
6-1x42" strips for middle border

From blue floral, cut:
6-4x42" strips for outer border

Assemble Blocks

1. Mark a diagonal line on wrong side of each hand-dyed green 2-1/2" square and 72 of the assorted red, green, brown, white, and navy blue print 2-1/2" squares.

2. Align a marked hand-dyed green square with one corner
of a mottled navy blue 4-1/2" square (Diagram 1; note direction of drawn line). Sew on drawn line; trim excess, leaving 1/4" seam allowance. Press open attached triangle.

3. Align a marked red, green, brown, white, or navy blue print square with opposite corner of mottled navy blue square (Diagram 1; again note direction of drawn line). Stitch, trim, and press as before to make a Floating Star unit. The unit should be 4-1/2" square including seam allowances.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to make 72 Floating Star units total.

5. Sew together four assorted red, green, brown, white, and navy blue print 2-1/2" squares in pairs (Diagram 2). Press seams in opposite directions. Join pairs to make a Four-Patch unit. Press seam in one direction. The unit should be 4-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 72 Four-Patch units total.

6. Referring to Diagram 3, sew together two Four-Patch units and two Floating Star units in pairs. Press seams in opposite directions. Join pairs to make an Arkansas Crossroads block. Press seam in one direction. The block should be 8-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 36 Arkansas Crossroads blocks total.

Assemble Blocks

1. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, lay out blocks in six rows, noting direction of Floating Star units and placement of hand-dyed green corner in each unit.

2. Sew together blocks in each row. Press seams in one direction, alternating direction with each row.

3. Join rows to make quilt center. Press seams in one direction. The quilt center should be 48-1/2" square including seam allowances.

4. Cut and piece green floral 2x42" strips to make:
2-2x51-1/2" inner border strips
2-2x48-1/2" inner border strips

5. Sew short inner border strips to opposite edges of quilt center. Add long inner border strips to remaining edges. Press all seams toward border.

6. Cut and piece mottled red 1x42" strips to make:
2-1x52-1/2" inner border strips
2-1x51-1/2" inner border strips

7. Sew short middle border strips to opposite edges of quilt center. Add long middle border strips to remaining edges. Press all seams toward middle border.

8. Cut and piece blue floral 4x42" strips to make:
2-4x59-1/2" outer border strips
2-4x52-1/2" outer border strips

9. Sew short outer border strips to opposite edges of quilt center. Add long outer border strips to remaining edges to complete quilt top. Press all seams toward outer border.

Finish Quilt

1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste. Quilt as desired.

2. Bind with blue floral binding strips.
