Materials
- 1-1/2 yards total assorted bright stripes and plaids (blocks)
- 2-1/2 yards total assorted bright solids (blocks, binding)
- 3-1/2 yards backing fabric
- 61" square batting
Finished quilt: 54-1/2" square
Finished block: 9" square
Quantities are for 44/45"-wide, 100% cotton fabrics.
Measurements include 1/4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.
Cut Fabrics
To make the best use of your fabrics, cut pieces in the following order.
Cut border strips lengthwise (parallel to the selvages).
From assorted bright stripes and plaids, cut:
- 114--3-1/2" squares
From assorted bright solids, cut:
- 18--9-1/2" squares
- 48--3-1/2" squares
Enough 2-1/2"-wide strips in assorted lengths to total 250" for binding
Assemble Nine-Patch Blocks
The instructions that follow result in one Nine-Patch block. Repeat to make 18 Nine-Patch blocks total.
1. Referring to Nine-Patch Diagram, lay out a total of nine bright stripes, plaids, and solid 3-1/2" squares in three rows.
2. Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams in one direction, alternating direction with each row.
3. Join rows to make a Nine-Patch block. Press seams in one direction. The Nine-Patch block should be 9-1/2" square including seam allowances.
Assemble Quilt Center
1. Referring to photo, lay out Nine-Patch blocks and 9-1/2" squares in six rows, alternating blocks and squares.
2. Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams in one direction, alternating direction with each row.
3. Join rows to make quilt center. Press seams in one direction. The quilt center should be 54-1/2" square including seam allowances.
Finish Quilt
1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste.
2. Quilt as desired.
3. Using diagonal seams, join assorted bright solid 2-1/2"-wide strips to make a pieced binding strip. Bind quilt with pieced binding strip.
