Materials

Yardages and cutting instructions are based on 42" of usable fabric width.

  • 4-1⁄2 yards total assorted prints (blocks)
  • 1-5⁄8 yards black print (border)
  • 2⁄3 yard orange print (binding)
  • 5-3⁄8 yards backing fabric
  • 73×97" batting

Cut Fabrics

Cut pieces in the following order.

For Block A, from assorted prints, cut:

  • 10—-2×15-1⁄2" strips
  • 10—-2×14" strips
  • 10—-2×12-1⁄2" strips
  • 10—-2×11" strips
  • 10—-2×9-1⁄2" strips
  • 10—-2×8" strips
  • 10—-2×6-1⁄2" strips
  • 10—-2×5" strips
  • 20—-5" squares

For Block B, from assorted prints, cut:

  • 10—-2×15-1⁄2" strips
  • 20—-2×14" strips
  • 20—-2×12-1⁄2" strips
  • 20—-2×11" strips
  • 10—-2×9-1⁄2" strips
  • 40—-5" squares

From black print, cut:

  • 8—-7×42" strips for border

From orange print, cut:

  • 8—-2-1⁄2×42" binding strips

Assemble A Blocks

Measurements include 1⁄4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

Press seams in directions indicated by arrows on diagrams. If no direction is specified, press seam toward darker fabric. 

1) Referring to Diagram 1, join two assorted print 5" squares.

2) Add an assorted print 2×5" strip to top edge of Step 1 unit (Diagram 2).

3) Add an assorted print 2×11" strip to right-hand edge of Step 2 unit (Diagram 3).

4) Sew an assorted print 2×6-1⁄2" strip to bottom edge of Step 3 unit (Diagram 4).

5) Sew an assorted print 2×12-1⁄2" strip to left-hand edge of Step 4 unit (Diagram 5).

6) Referring to Diagram 6, continue adding strips in sequence to make Block A. Press all seams toward just-added strips. The block should be 11×15-1⁄2" including seam allowances.

7) Repeat steps 1–6 to make 10 A blocks total. 

Assemble B Blocks

1) Sew together four assorted print 5" squares in pairs (Diagram 7). Join pairs to make a Four-Patch unit. The unit should be 9-1⁄2" square including seam allowances.

2) Repeat Step 1 to make 10 Four-Patch units total.  

3) Add an assorted print 2×9-1⁄2" strip to top edge of a Four-Patch unit (Diagram 8). Press seam away from Four-Patch unit.

4) Referring to Diagram 8 for placement and working in a clockwise direction, join assorted print strips to Step 3 Four-Patch unit to make Block B. Press all seams away from Four-Patch unit. The block should be 15-1⁄2" square including seam allowances.

5) Repeat steps 3 and 4 to make 10 B blocks total.

Assemble Quilt Center

1) Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, lay out blocks in five horizontal rows, alternating A and B blocks in each row. 

Logging On

2) Sew together blocks in each row. Press seams in one direction, alternating direction with each row. Join rows to make quilt center; press seams in one direction. The quilt center should be 51-1⁄2×75-1⁄2" including seam allowances.

Add Borders

1) Cut and piece black print 7×42" strips to make:

  • 2—-7×75-1⁄2" border strips
  • 2—-7×64-1⁄2" border strips

2) Sew long border strips to long edges of quilt center. Add short border strips to remaining edges to complete quilt top. Press all seams toward border.

Finish Quilt

1) Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste. 

2) Quilt as desired. Clarine Howe machine-quilted swirling feathers and leaf designs across the quilt top.

3) Bind with orange print binding strips.
