Create Courthouse Steps blocks, alternating color placement of the chocolate and vanilla-color block backgrounds, to make this easy quilt. Toss some polka dot prints in the mix (they remind us of jelly beans) and you've got a yummy throw!

Materials

  • 1-1/3 yards total assorted cream prints and polka dots (blocks)
  • 1-1/2 yards total assorted brown prints and polka dots (blocks)
  • 3/4 yard multicolor stripe (binding)
  • 3 yards backing fabric
  • 52" square batting

Finished quilt: 45-1/2" square

Finished block: 9" square

Quantities are for 44/45"-wide,100% cotton fabrics.

Measurements include 1/4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

Cut Fabrics

Cut pieces in the following order:

From assorted cream prints and polka dots, cut:

  • 12--3-1/2" squares
  • 24--2x9-1/2" rectangles
  • 50--2x6-1/2" rectangles
  • 26--2x3-1/2" rectangles

From assorted brown prints and polka dots, cut:

  • 13--3-1/2" squares
  • 26--2x9-1/2" rectangles
  • 50--2x6-1/2" rectangles
  • 24--2x3-1/2" rectangles

From multicolor stripe, cut:

  • 2-1/2"wide bias strips to total 200"

Assemble A Blocks

Instructions that follow result in one block made with a brown print or polka dot center, cream print or polka dot first round, and brown print or polka dot outer round. Repeat assembly instructions to make 13 A blocks total.

1. Sew cream print or polka dot 2x3-1/2" rectangles to opposite edges of a brown print or polka dot 3-1/2" square (Diagram 1).

2. Join cream print or polka dot 2x6-1/2" rectangles to remaining edges to make a center unit.

3. Sew brown print or polka dot 2x6-1/2" rectangles to opposite edges of center unit.

4. Join brown print or polka dot 2x9-1/2" rectangles to remaining edges to complete unit A.

5. Press all seams toward brown print or polka dot square.

Block A should be 9-1/2" square including seam allowances.

Assemble B Blocks

Instructions that follow result in one block made with a cream print or polka dot center, brown print or polka dot first round, and cream print or polka dot outer round. Repeat assembly instructions to make 12 B blocks total.

1. Sew brown print or polka dot 2x3-1/2" rectangles to opposite edges of a cream print or polka dot 3-1/2" square (Diagram 2).

2. Join brown print or polka dot 2x6-1/2" rectangles to remaining edges to make a center unit.

3. Sew cream print or polka dot 2x6-1/2" rectangles to opposite edges of center unit.

4. Join cream print or polka dot 2x9-1/2" rectangles to remaining edges to complete unit A.

5. Press all seams toward cream print or polka dot square. Blocks B should be 9-1/2" square including seam allowances.

Assemble Rows

1. Referring to photo of quilt, lay out blocks in rows.

2. Sew together blocks in each row. Press seams in one direction, alternating direction with each row.

3. Join rows to make quilt center. Press seams in one direction.

Finish Quilt

1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste. Quilt as desired.

2. Bind with multicolor stripe bias binding strips.
