Assemble Quilt Center

1. Sew together a green print A diamond and a gold print A diamond (Diagram 1). Press seam in one direction. Join pair to one edge of coral print B diamond. Press seam toward pieced diamonds.

2. Referring to Diagram 2, sew together a green print A diamond, a gold print A diamond, and a blue print A diamond. Press seams toward green print. Join strip to adjacent edge of Step 1 pieced unit to make a star point unit. Press seam toward pieced diamonds.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to make eight star point units total.

4. Join two star point units, making sure you do not stitch into the 1/4" seam allowance at corners (black dots on Diagram 3). Set a green print triangle into the inner corner to make a partial star unit (see "Setting Seams"); press seams toward diamonds. Repeat to make four partial star units total.

5. Sew together partial star units in pairs, then join pairs to make a star, making sure you do not stitch into 1/4" seam allowances (Diagram 4).

6. Set a tree print 12-1/2" square into each corner of star to complete quilt center (Diagram 5). The quilt center should be 41-1/2" square including seam allowances.

Assemble Middle Border Blocks

1. Sew together two orange print 1-1/2x42" strips and an Asian floral 4-1/2x42" strip to make strip set A (Diagram 6). Press seams toward orange print strips. Repeat with remaining Asian floral 4-1/2x42" strip and orange print strips to make a second strip set A. Cut each A strip set into eight 4-1/2"-wide A segments.

2. Sew together two blue print 11/2x42" strips and an orange print 4-1/2x42" strip to make strip set B (Diagram 7). Press seams toward orange print strip. Repeat to make two total of strip set B. Cut B strip sets into thirty-two 11/2"-wide B segments.

3. Referring to Diagram 8, join one A segment and two B segments to make a floral border block. Press seams toward B segments. The block should be 6-1/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 16 floral border blocks total.

4. Sew together two light blue print 1-1/2x42" strips and an Asian print 4-1/2x42" strip to make strip set C (Diagram 9). Press seams toward Asian print strips. Repeat with remaining Asian print 4-1/2x42" strip and light blue print strips to make a second strip set C. Cut each C strip set into eight 4-1/2"-wide C segments.

5. Sew together two gold print 1-1/2x42" strips and a light blue print 4-1/2x42" strip to make strip set D (Diagram 10). Press seams toward orange print strips. Repeat to make two total of strip set D. Cut D strip sets into thirty-two 1-1/2"-wide D segments.

Finish Quilt

1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste.

2. Quilt as desired. Quilting design could include a feathered leaf-and-bud pattern in the large star and background; highlighting each border block with echo quilting, placing an X in the center of each block, and filling the outer border with a winding feathered leaf pattern (Quilting Diagram).

3. Bind with green print binding strips.
