Rail Fence Baby Quilt

3/4 yard total assorted dark prints and tone-on-tones in blue, orange, yellow, green, and red (blocks)
3/4 yard total assorted light and medium prints in yellow, green, and blue (blocks)
1/4 yard red tone-on-tone (inner border)
1-1/8 yards multicolor print (outer border, binding) If you are using a directional print, such as the featured bear print, you will need 1-1/2 yards.
2-5/8 yards backing fabric
46x56" batting
Finished quilt: 37-1/2x47-1/2"
Finished blocks: 5" square
Quantities are for 44/45"-wide, 100% cotton fabrics.
Measurements include 1/4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.
Cut Fabrics
Cut pieces in the following order.
From assorted dark prints and tone-on-tones, cut:
28-1-1/2x18" strips (6 sets of three matching strips and 5 sets of two matching strips)
From assorted light and medium prints, cut:
27-1-1/2x18" strips (5 sets of three matching strips and 6 sets of two matching strips)
From red tone-on-tone, cut:
2-1-1/2x351/2" inner border strips
2-1-1/2x271/2" inner border strips
From multicolor print, cut:
4-5-1/2x37-1/2" outer border strips (If you are using a directional print, such as the featured bear print, cut two outer border strips lengthwise [parallel to the selvages].)
5-2-1/2x42" binding strips (If you are using a directional print, cut bindings strips lengthwise.)
Assemble Blocks
1. Referring to Diagram 1, join three 1-1/2x18" strips from one assorted dark print or tone-on-tone and two 1-1/2x18" strips from one assorted light or medium print to make a dark strip set. Press seams in one direction. Repeat to make six dark strip sets total. Cut strip sets into 5-1/2"-wide segments to make 18 dark Rail Fence blocks total. Each block should be 5-1/2" square including seam allowances.
2. Referring to Diagram 2, sew together three 1-1/2x18" strips from one assorted light or medium print and two 1-1/2x18" strips from one assorted dark print or tone-on-tone to make a light strip set. Press seams in one direction. Repeat to make five light strip sets total. Cut strip sets into 5-1/2"-wide segments to make 17 light Rail Fence blocks total. Each block should be 5-1/2" square including seam allowances.
Assemble Quilt Center
1. Referring to photo and Quilt Assembly Diagram, lay out Rail Fence blocks in seven rows, alternating light and dark blocks. Strips in dark blocks should run horizontally and strips in light blocks should run vertically.
2. Sew together blocks in each row. Press seams toward light blocks. Join rows to complete quilt top; press seams in one direction.
Add Borders
1. Sew long inner border strips to long edges of quilt center. Add short inner border strips to remaining edges. Press all seams toward inner border.
2. Sew multicolor print 5-1/2x37-1/2" outer border strips to long edges of quilt center. Add remaining multicolor print outer border strips to remaining edges to complete quilt top. Press all seams toward outer border.
Finish Quilt
1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste. Quilt as desired.
2. Bind with multicolor print binding strips.
