Materials

  • 3-1/2 yards total assorted polka dots in cream, blue, yellow, green, and red (block)
  • 1/2 yard black-and-cream polka dot (binding)
  • 3-1/4 yards cotton fabric or 1-2/3 yards of 59"-wide plush fabric (backing)
  • 58" square batting

Finished quilt: 51-1/2" square

Quantities are for 44/45"-wide, 100% cotton fabrics.

Measurements include 1/4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

Cut Fabrics

Cut pieces in the following order.

From assorted polka dots, cut:

  • 2--6-1/2x42" strips, cutting and piecing them to make one 6-1/2x51-1/2" rectangle for Position 16
  • 2--7-1/2x42" strips, cutting and piecing them to make one 7-1/2x45-1/2"rectangle for Position 15
  • 2--6-1/2x42" strips, cutting and piecing them to make one 6-1/2x44-1/2" rectangle for Position 14
  • 1--6-1/2x39-1/2" rectangle for Position 13
  • 1--8x38-1/2" rectangle for Position 12
  • 1--8x32" rectangle for Position 11
  • 1--6-1/2x31" rectangle for Position 10
  • 1--6x26" rectangle for Position 9
  • 1--5x25-1/2" rectangle for Position 8
  • 1--5x21-1/2" rectangle for Position 7
  • 1--6-1/2x21" rectangle for Position 6
  • 1--7x15-1/2" rectangle for Position 5
  • 1--6x14-1/2" rectangle for Position 4
  • 1--5x10" rectangle for Position 3
  • 1--4-1/2x10" rectangle for Position 2
  • 1--3-1/2x6" rectangle for Position 1

Assemble Quilt Top

1. Sew assorted polka dot Position 1 rectangle to top edge of assorted polka dot 6x7" block center (Diagram 1). Press seam away from block center.

2. Add assorted polka dot Position 2 rectangle to left-hand edge of Step 1 unit (Diagram 2). Press seam as before.

3. Add assorted polka dot Position 3 rectangle to bottom edge of Step 2 unit; press as before (Diagram 3).

4. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, continue sewing rectangles in a counterclockwise direction to make a Log Cabin block. Press all seams away from block center. The block, or quilt top, should be 51-1/2" square including seam allowances.

Finish Quilt

From black-and-cream polka dot, cut

  • 6--2-1/2x42" binding strips

1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste.

2. Quilt as desired.

3. Bind with black-and-cream polka dot binding strips.
