Sew for Charity: We'll Get You Started

‘Tis the season of giving! The holidays are a meaningful time to sew for a charity. Using your talents to help others will spread cheer and love to your community and those in need. Especially this year, it seems like many people need a little lift in their spirits, and nothing shows you care more than giving a handmade item. Quilters are some of the most generous people we know. Most quilters already share their handmade items with others– either by giving gifts to family and friends or by regularly donating to a sewing charity they love. But if you’ve never donated to a sewing charity before or are looking for new ways to share your talents, we have a few tips in this episode to get you started.

One Million Pillowcase Challenge

Beth shares an exciting update about our own charity: the One Million Pillowcase Challenge. Because of recent donations, we're now less than 4,000 away from reaching our goal of 1,000,000 pillowcases donated to local charities! We'd love to hit our goal by the end of the year, so if you're planning to sew for a charity during the holidays, please consider helping us! You can find free patterns here. Or consider making a pillowcase that doubles as a drawstring bag that you can fill with toiletry items, small toys, or non-perishables. And you can add your donation to our counter here.

Behind-the-Scenes

Keeping with the holiday spirit, we have two programs happening in November that we think our listeners will LOVE!

The first is Sew Thankful, a two-week celebration of things and people to be grateful for in our quilting lives. Each day leading up to Thanksgiving, we'll issue a prompt on social media that will inspire you to share stories or photos of things you're thankful for this holiday season. Each day from November 12-25, 2020, we'll post the day's prompt on social media.

Then, the weekend of Thanksgiving we’re hosting a Virtual Quilt Retreat! We know the holidays may be tough for some this year. If your Thanksgiving plans were cancelled, or you're just looking for some motivation to work on holiday decor and gifts, we hope you join us on Saturday. November 28, 2020, for our Virtual Quilt Retreat. No need to sign up (or even leave your house). Just log into Facebook and Instagram to join us!

What Were Loving

We're all about the quilty gifts right now – both as things to put on your own wish list, but also to give to other sewers in your life!

Quilting Changes Everything

After watching the number of COVID-related deaths increase, Madeline Fugate, an 8th grade student from Studio City, California, felt compelled to memorialize the individual lives lost through quilting. Madeline put a call out for people to create 8”-square fabric memorial squares to be put into a quilt. “The quilt squares can be anything – a name, a photo, a poem, a sports team, even a square form a favorite T-shirt – anything that makes the person real, so they are not just numbers in the news,” she said.
