Historic District

Pine Needles is located in historic Gardner Village, a retail district built around an 1877 flour mill in West Jordan, Utah, a Salt Lake City suburb. Although the area has a storied past, owner Sandra Workman makes sure the inventory doesn't by continually evolving the fabric lines and displays.

Cute Clothing Patterns

Patterns and samples for kids' items are aplenty at Pine Needles, including Little Miss Sassafras jacket and cargo pants from Kati Cupcake Pattern Co., Jack and Jill Hat from Izzy & Ivy Designs, and Quilted Baby T-Strap Shoes from Curby's Closet Boutique.

3D to Embroidery

Sunshine and Smiles framed embroidery from Gigglee Designs and Hooty & Tweet owl pincushion from Melly & Me Patterns sit atop HOLLYwood Squares table topper from Pine Needle's store manager Holly Draney. The vignette is backed by Daisy Roll wall hanging from The Pattern Basket and Ava bag from All My Bags & Quilts Too. On the bookshelf, Parlor Dachshund from Three Tree Point Graphics stands watch.

In the Details

In A Little Bit of Boo machine-quilter Chelsea Fitzgerald outlined images in the fussy-cut squares with stitching and stitched spider webs to complement the Halloween novelty fabric.

More Machine Quilting

Chelsea stippled the background of the embroidered squares and stitched meandering swirls, ghosts, and pumpkins in the border.

A Little Bit of Boo Color Option

Quilt tester Laura Boehnke used half as many blocks as the original to make a smaller version of A Little Bit of Boo. Instead of adding hand embroidery, she fussy-cut and framed printed chicks from the Fresh Off the Farm collection by Kelly Mueller for Red Rooster Fabrics. To add extra embellishment, Laura used a printed panel as one of the border strips.

Contact Pine Needles to purchase a copy of the Fall/Winter 2010 issue of Quilt Sampler magazine. Issues are also available at your local quilt shop, on newsstands, and online.
