4-16" square butterfly panel sections or 1 yard theme print (pillow top)
1/4 yard black dot (piping)
2-1/4 yards butterfly print (borders, pillow back)
40" square backing fabric
40" square batting
1x27" strip hook-and-loop tape
30" square pillow form

Finished pillow: 37" square

Quantities are for 44/45"-wide, 100% cotton fabrics.

Cut Fabrics

Cut pieces in the following order.

From theme print, cut:
4-16" squares

From black dot, cut:
4-2x31" strips

From butterfly print, cut:
2-19-1/2x31" rectangles
4-4-1/2x38" border strips

Assemble Pillow Top

1. Referring to Pillow Top Assembly Diagram, lay out four 16" squares in pairs. Sew together squares in each pair; press seams in opposite directions. Join pairs to make pillow center. Press seam in one direction. The pillow center should be 31" square including seam allowances.

2. With wrong side inside, fold a 2x31" black dot strip in half lengthwise. Press to make a 1x31" piping strip. Repeat to make four piping strips total.

3. Referring to Piping Diagram, align a piping strip with a pillow center edge; baste. Repeat with remaining piping strips and remaining pillow center edges.

4. Referring to Pillow Top Assembly Diagram, sew short butterfly print border strips to opposite edges of pillow center. Press seams open. Add long border strips to remaining edges to make pillow top. Press seams open. The pillow top should be 38" square including seam allowances.

5. Layer pillow top, batting, and backing; baste.

6. Using matching or monofilament thread, machine quilt around butterfly shapes through all layers.

7. Trim pillow top to 38" square including seam allowances.

Finish Pillow

1. Turn under one long edge of each butterfly print 19-1/2x31" rectangle 1"; press. Turn under 1" again and stitch in place to hem pillow back pieces.

2. Center and sew one part of hook-and-loop tape to hemmed edge on wrong side of one pillow back piece (Diagram 1; note placement of tape from hemmed edge.) Sew the other part of hook-and-loop tape to right side of remaining pillow back piece, 14" from unhemmed edge.

3. Referring to Pillow Back Assembly Diagram, overlap hemmed edges of pillow back pieces by about 4" to make a 31"–square pillow back center. Baste center portion of overlapped edges.

4. Referring to Assemble Pillow Top, Step 4, join border strips to pillow back center to make pillow back.

5. Layer pillow top and pillow back right sides together. Stitch around all edges. Turn right side out and press.

6. Align pillow front and pillow back border seams. Referring to Diagram 2, stitch in the ditch around all edges between pillow center and border to complete pillow cover. Insert pillow form through opening.
