Sew up a spacious bag that meets all your needs. Two sets of inside pockets have room for keys, a notebook, a cell phone, and a planner, making this roomy carryall the perfect size for taking along on an all-day outing. Project maker Judy Sams Sohn chose eye-catching bold prints from the Santorini collection by Lila Tueller for Moda Fabrics.

  • 2--5-3/4x5-1/2" B rectangles

From stiff interfacing, cut:

  • 1--8-1/2x11-1/2" rectangle

Assemble Bag Body

1. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse an A interfacing rectangle to wrong side of each green-and-white print A rectangle, an interfacing B rectangle to wrong side of each green stripe B rectangle, and an interfacing C square to wrong side of each brown leaf print C square.

2. Referring to Diagram 1, sew together fused green-and-white print A rectangle and fused green stripe B rectangle to make a bag unit; press seam toward green-and-white print rectangle. Topstitch 1/8" from seam line.

3. Sew bag unit to fused brown leaf print C square; press seam toward large square. Topstitch 1/8" from seam line to make a bag front (Diagram 2).

img_large-baglg_3a.jpg

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to make a matching bag back.

5. Layer bag front and back right sides together. Sew together along short bottom edges to make bag center. Using tip of iron, carefully press seam open (Diagram 3).

img_large-baglg_3b.jpg

6. Referring to Diagram 4, sew dark green print 1/2x1" strips to corners of stiff interfacing 8-1/2x11-1/2" rectangle to make joining tabs; the tabs should extend 1/2" past edges. (The tabs will hold interfacing in place, minimizing bulk in seams.) Center and baste interfacing rectangle over opened seam with tabs extending to long edges of bag center (Diagram 5). Working on the right side of bag center, topstitch 1/8" on either side of seam (Diagram 6) to secure interfacing.

Add Bag Sides

1. Fuse an interfacing D rectangle to wrong side of each brown dot D rectangle.

2. Using Corner Cutting Pattern, mark curved cutting line on bottom corners of both interfaced D rectangles (Diagram 7). Trim along lines to round corners and make side panel pieces. Fold each side panel in half lengthwise; mark bottom center with a pin and unfold.

img_large-baglg_4.jpg

3. Matching bag center bottom seam and a side panel bottom center, join pieces, easing bag center around rounded corners of side panel and securing tabs on interfacing in seam (Diagram 8). Repeat with opposite bag center edge and remaining side panel to make bag body.

img_large-baglg_4a.jpg

4. Turn and press top edge of bag body 1/2" to wrong side. Turn bag body right side out.

Assemble and Attach Straps

1. Center a 2x24" interfacing strip on wrong side of a green stripe 2-1/2"x24" strip; fuse.

2. Fold and press fused green stripe strip in half lengthwise with wrong side inside.

3. Open and press long edges 1/4" to wrong side. Refold in half and press. Insert 1x24" batting strip into folded green stripe strip. Topstitch 1/8" from long edges to make a strap (Diagram 9).

img_large-baglg_5.jpg

4. Repeat steps 1–3 to make a second strap.

5. Referring to Diagram 10, center and pin one end of a strap under bag side seam. Stitch in the ditch to secure strap to bag. Repeat with opposite strap end at remaining seam on same side of bag. Repeat with second strap on opposite side of bag.

Assemble Pockets and Lining

1. Fold dark green print 9x13" rectangle in half with right side inside to form a 6-1/2x9" rectangle. Fuse a 6-1/2x9" interfacing rectangle to wrong side of half the folded rectangle.

2. Sew folded rectangle along three open edges, leaving a 3" opening in long edge (Diagram 11). Turn right side out through opening and press flat to make pocket piece. Turn under opening's raw edges; hand-stitch opening closed.

img_large-baglg_6.jpg

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to make a second pocket piece.

4. Fuse an interfacing E rectangle to wrong side of each green floral E rectangle and an interfacing F rectangle to wrong side of each dark green print F rectangle.

5. Referring to Diagram 12, sew together a fused green floral rectangle and a fused dark green print rectangle along long edges; press seam toward dark green print rectangle. Topstitch 1/8" from seam line to make a lining unit. Repeat to make a second lining unit.

img_large-baglg_6a.jpg

6. Referring to Diagram 13, position pocket on right side of a lining unit; pin in place. Edgestitch pocket to lining unit along pocket's side and bottom edges; leave top edge open. Stitch pocket divider as marked.

img_large-baglg_6b_0.jpg

7. Join lining units along side and bottom edges to make lining body.

8. To shape flat bottom for lining, at one corner match bottom seam line to side seam line, creating a flattened triangle (Diagram 14). Measuring 4-1/4" from point of triangle, draw a line across triangle. Sew on drawn line. Trim excess fabric. Repeat with remaining bottom corner.

img_large-baglg_6c_0.jpg

9. Turn and press top edge of bag lining 1/2" to wrong side. Do not turn right side out.

10. Referring to manufacturer's instructions, center and attach magnetic snap closure to right sides of bag lining 1" from folded edge.

Assemble Bag

1. Mark top center of bag side edge. Fold 2" on both sides of center mark together to make an inverted box pleat (Diagram 15). Baste in place. Repeat to make pleat at opposite bag side.

img_large-baglg_7_0.jpg

2. Mark lining top edge 2-1/4" from seam in both directions. Fold lining edge 1" at each mark to make a box pleat (Diagram 16). Baste in place. Repeat to make a box pleat at opposite side edge of lining.

img_large-baglg_7a_0.jpg

3. Insert lining into bag with wrong sides together. Align folded top edges and nest pleats.

4. Topstitch bag and lining together 1/8" and 1/4" from top edge to complete bag.
