Machine Minute - Needle and Thread Combos: Metallics
Selecting the correct needle for the thread you are using is key to achieving a perfect stitch.
Hi, I'm Jennifer here with another Machine Minute brought to you by Baby Lock and the Symphony machine. Specialty threads are all the rage in quilting these days, and it's fun to experiment with some of the different fibers. Metallics really seem to be gaining in popularity, but there are few tips and tricks you need to know if you want to work with them and your sewing machine. First and foremost you need to get your needle and thread combination lined up. There are special needles made just for working with metallic threads and they're identified on the wall great wall of notions as metallic needles. This package happens to be an 80/12, which is a standard size you would use in working with quilting cottons, but what's important to note about the metallic needle is that they have a larger eye to accommodate the metallic threads, because even though metallic threads look more fragile, and they are a little bit more breakable, you need a larger eye in the needle to accommodate the thread as it's going through the machine because a great amount of heat and friction are generated by the metallic thread against the metallic needle as it goes through. If you don't have that special metallic needle when you're working with this thread, you'll often get burrs on the needle which can cause it to break and cause too much friction to build up. And you'll have difficulty with skipped stitches or thread breakage. So if experimenting with metallic threads is your desire, make sure you get the right needle to go along with your thread. Sew a little bit slower than you might usually be used to sewing, and your results should be sparkling.
