Machine Minute - Perfect Pivots
Sewing in circles doesn't have to drive you crazy! Watch this video for some easy tips on perfect pivoting.
Hi, I'm Jennifer, with another Machine Minute brought to you by Baby Lock and the Symphony machine. Circles are a popular motif these days, but sewing in circles can drive you crazy if you don't know a few secrets to making it come out smooth and even. You can sew using a straight stitch or a zigzag. If you're doing a straight stitch, the secret is to pivot every few stitches ever so slightly. If you're using a zigzag stitch, the secret is where the needle stops in the stitch. You always want it to stop in the right-hand swing of the zigzag stitch every time you pivot. Let me show you. When you position your needle, you want to pay particular attention to the swing of the needle. In this case I am using this fabric. I've put some batting in between and a backing fabric, and I'm eventually going to cut it out to make ornaments. So I want to make sure that all my stitching stays inside the circles, so I don't accidentally cut it. Now when I start stitching, I'm going to take a few stitches and stop with the needle in the right-hand swing of the zigzag. I'll lift my presser foot slightly and pivot very gently. And again, lift my presser foot slightly, pivot slightly. You don't want to make any radical or big changes when you're pivoting. You just wanna lift the presser foot enough that you can pivot the fabric slightly. And every time I stop, I want to make sure my needle is on the right-hand swing of that zigzag. So work your way around the circle. Take it slow and easy, and sewing circles can be fun.
