Covered Cording

Placed between your quilt and the binding, or around a pillow's edge, piping adds a special touch. Learn the secret to making your own covered cording.

Assembly Steps

Covered cording, also called piping, is made by sewing a fabric strip around a length of cording. The width of the strip varies according to the diameter of your cording. Refer to the specific project instructions for those measurements. Regardless, the method used to cover the cording is the same.

1. With the wrong side inside, fold under 1-1/2" at one end of the strip. With the wrong side inside, fold the strip in half lengthwise to make the cording cover. Insert the cording next to the folded edge, placing a cording end 1" from the cording cover folded end. Using a cording foot or zipper foot, sew through the fabric layers right next to the cording (Diagram 1).

2. When attaching the cording to your project, begin stitching 1-1/2" from the covered cording’s folded end. As you stitch each corner, clip the seam allowance to within a few threads of the stitching line; gently ease the covered cording into place (Diagram 2).

3. After going around the entire edge of the project, cut the end of the cording so that it will fit snugly into the folded opening at the beginning (Diagram 3). The ends of the cording should abut inside the covering.

4. Stitch the ends in place to secure (Diagram 4).
