Is Anything Missing?
Variety in fabrics results in an eye-catching quilt. After you’ve selected the fabrics for a project, ask yourself these questions about the combination’s contrast, color, and character to see if you’ve achieved variety and what, if anything, is missing.
- Is there a variety of light-, medium-, and dark-value fabrics for the blocks, appliqués, and overall quilt top?
- Have I selected colors according to a certain color scheme or grouping of color families--such as primary (red, blue, yellow), secondary (orange, violet, green), complementary (opposites on the color wheel), or tertiary (combination of primary and secondary colors, such as red-orange or blue-green)?
- Did I include shades (where black is added for a darker color) and tints (where white is added for a lighter color) of the color families that are represented?
- Do the fabric intensities work well together?
- Did I include small-, medium-, and large-scale prints?
- Have I chosen a variety of print styles?
- Is the mood of the fabrics right for the quilt I want to make?
