Art Deco Flower Table Topper

To make the urn appliqué appear to be more intricate than it is, fussy-cut a stripe to look like ornamentation. For an Art Deco look and greater definition of fused appliqué pieces, outline each one with a narrow black satin stitch. Fabrics are from the Saturday Afternoon collection by Jane Spolar of Quilt Poetry for Northcott.

Assemble Pinwheel Blocks

1. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on wrong side of each fuchsia geometric print 2-7⁄8" square.

2. Layer a marked fuchsia geometric print square atop a black print 2-7⁄8" square. Sew together with two seams, stitching 1⁄4" on each side of marked line (Diagram 1). Cut apart on drawn line to make two triangle units. Press each triangle unit open, pressing seam toward black print, to make two triangle-squares. Each triangle-square should be 2-1⁄2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 80 triangle-squares total.

3. Referring to Diagram 2, sew together four triangle-squares in pairs. Press seams toward black print triangles. Join pairs to make a Pinwheel block; press seam in one direction. The block should be 4-1⁄2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 20 Pinwheel blocks total.
