PROJECTS & IDEAS | THROWS & WALL

Patriotic Points Wall Hanging

Fabrics in reds, creams, and blues turn simple blocks into patriotic patterns that are stunning when combined into a Americana wall hanging. An impactful star block in the center provides a shining focal point. Fabrics are from Linda Ludovico’s Stonehenge: Stars & Stripes collection for Northcott.

Assemble Star Block

1. Referring to Diagram 4, sew together red print 2-1⁄2x12" strip and cream print 4-1⁄2x12" strip to make strip set A. Press seam toward cream print. Cut strip set into four 2-1⁄2"-wide A segments.

2. Join cream print 2-1⁄2x12" strip, a red print 2-1⁄2x12" strip, and tan eagle print 2-1⁄2x12" strip to make strip set B (Diagram 5). Press as before. Cut strip set into four 2-1⁄2"-wide B segments.

3. Using tan eagle print instead of cream print, repeat Step 1 to make strip set C; cut it into four 2-1⁄2"-wide C segments.

4. Sew together one A segment, one B segment, and one C segment to make a corner unit (Diagram 6). Press seams away from B segment. The unit should be 6-1⁄2” square including seam allowances. Repeat to make four corner units total.

5. Referring to Diagram 7, sew together four cream print 3-1⁄2" squares, four small Flying Geese units, and blue star print 6-1⁄2" square in three rows. Press seams away from Flying Geese units. Join rows to make a star block; press seams toward middle row. The star block should be 12-1⁄2" square including seam allowances.

6. Referring to Diagram 8, sew together four corner units, four large Flying Geese units, and block center in three rows. Press seams toward Flying Geese units. Join rows to make a star block; press seams away from middle row. The block should be 24-1⁄2" square including seam allowances.
