Appliqué Blocks

1. Fold each cream print 12-1/2" square in half diagonally twice. Lightly press folds to create four foundation squares with appliqué placement guidelines; unfold.

2. Referring to Block Appliqué Placement Diagram, lay out the following on a cream print foundation square: one each of green-and-tan print A, B, and B reversed stems; three each of green-and-tan print C and C reversed leaves; three each of solid light pink D, E, and E reversed flower pieces; six green-and-tan print F circles; three light blue print G flowers; six tan floral H pieces; and one each of solid dark pink I, I reversed, and J ribbons.

3. Beginning with bottom layer and working up, baste pieces in place with a few dots of basting glue; avoid getting glue within 1/4" of drawn lines so you’ll have ample room to turn under seam allowance with your needle. Peel freezer-paper off each fabric shape before gluing next layer in place.

4. Thread a hand-sewing needle with thread that matches first appliqué piece. Using a small stitch and sweeping under a short section of seam allowance with your needle, hand-stitch piece in place. Repeat with remaining appliqué shapes to make an appliqué block; you do not need to turn under edges that will be covered by other appliqué pieces.

5. Repeat steps 2–4 to make four appliqué blocks total.

6. Fold each tan floral 6-1/2x36-1/2" strip in half twice. Lightly press folds to create two foundation strips with appliqué placement guidelines; unfold.

7. Referring to Inner Border Appliqué Placement Diagram, lay out the following shapes on a tan floral foundation strip: 12 each of green-and-tan print C and C reversed leaves, two green-and-tan print K stems, 12 solid dark pink L circles, and one pink large floral M heart. Glue-baste and hand-stitch pieces in place as before to make an appliquéd inner border strip. Repeat to make a second appliquéd inner border strip.

8. Fold each cream print 8-1/2" square in half twice. Lightly press folds to create four border foundation squares with appliqué placement guidelines; unfold.

9. Referring to Outer Border Appliqué Placement Diagram, lay out the following on a cream print border foundation square: one each of green-and-tan print N, O, and O reversed pieces; one light blue print Q band; one solid dark pink L circle; and one pink small floral P piece. Glue-baste and hand-stitch pieces in place as before to make a border block. Repeat to make four border blocks total.
