Straight-Laced
Avis and Tammy both enjoy rug hooking, and “Straight-Laced” offered Avis a way to use up some leftovers. She sewed the quarter-inch pieces of wool onto a wool foundation with a couching foot and variegated thread, then machine-appliquéd wool flowers over the top. The flowers are hand-embellished with wool-roving centers. “This piece is a bit challenging,” says Avis. “You have to start out with the first strip being square, as the rest of the strips are evenly spaced based on that first one.” The wool strips have raw edges, but because the wool is machine washed it becomes felted, and raveling isn’t a problem.
