Lifelong Friendship

Two plus four equals four.

That’s not some tricky math problem, but a real-life formula for Cori Derksen and Myra Harder. The equation refers to four years, early in their career, when the two friends had four babies while writing four books. “I wouldn’t recommend it,” laughs Myra,  “but we didn’t want to pass up the opportunity.”

Though the timing wasn’t perfect, the outcome has been worthwhile. In addition to their five books, under the name Blue Meadow Designs, the pair creates quilt patterns and design fabrics for RJR Fabrics: the fun and funky Bohemian Rhapsody is their second fabric line.

Although Cori and Myra, best friends since they were five, grew up around quilting (Myra’s mom owned a quilt shop), they didn’t sew their first quilt until they were 21.

“Our interest grew at a time when quilting was changing,” says Myra, who saw pattern and fabric designs become more adventurous in the mid-1990s. They sewed and displayed wall hangings, and soon shop patrons asked for patterns.
