Appliqué and Assemble the Quilt Center
Appliqué and Assemble the Quilt Center
1. Referring to the Quilt Assembly Diagram, lay out the 18 blocks in three vertical rows, alternating blocks A and B. In the quilt shown, all three rows were laid out starting with a Block A, then the middle row was flipped (note the direction the arrows run in the Quilt Assembly Diagram). This kept the construction easy but broke up the repetition of the blocks.
2. Before sewing together the blocks, place all of the appliqué pieces, including the three initials, on the blocks to determine their appropriate locations. Refer to diagrams 3, 4, and 5 for placement of the large, medium, and small flower appliqué shapes.
3. When you’re pleased with the arrangement of the appliqué shapes, fuse the pieces in place.
4. Using coordinating colors of thread and a small zigzag stitch, machine-stitch around each appliqué shape.
5. Sew together the blocks in each row. Press the seam allowances toward the B blocks. Then join the rows to make the quilt center. Press the seam allowances in one direction. The pieced quilt center should measure 60-1/2x90-1/2", including the seam allowances.
