PROJECTS & IDEAS | FOR BABY

Traffic Jam Wall Hanging

Frame a cute novelty print in border fabrics that pop with fun patterns in eye-catching colors. Simple shapes and bright colors are perfect for a child’s quilt. Fabrics are from Peak Hour collection by Kellie Wulfsohn of Don’t Look Now! for Riley Blake Designs, Mischief collection by Nancy Halvorsen for Benartex, and Backyard Baby collection by Patty Sloniger for Michael Miller Fabrics.

Assemble and Add Borders

1. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on wrong side of 36 solid white 3-1⁄2" squares. (To prevent fabric from stretching as you draw lines, place 220-grit sandpaper under each square.)

2. Align a marked solid white 3-1⁄2" square with one end of a green print 3-1⁄2x6-1⁄2" rectangle (Flying Geese Diagram; note direction of marked line). Sew on marked line. Trim seam allowance to 1⁄4". Press open attached triangle, pressing seam toward solid white. In same manner, add a second marked solid white square to opposite end of same rectangle to make a green print Flying Geese unit. The unit should be 6-1⁄2x3-1⁄2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make six green print Flying Geese units total.

3. Using yellow stripe and red dot 3-1⁄2x6-1⁄2" rectangles, repeat Step 2 to make six yellow stripe Flying Geese units and six red dot Flying Geese units.

4. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, sew together five assorted Flying Geese units to make a side border No. 1 strip. Press seams in one direction. The strip should be 3-1⁄2x30-1⁄2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make a second side border No. 1 strip.

5. Sew together four assorted Flying Geese units to make a border No. 1 segment. Press seams in one direction. Add a solid white 3-1⁄2" square to each end of border No. 1 segment to make a top border No. 1 strip (Quilt Assembly Diagram). Press seams toward Flying Geese units. The strip should be 3-1⁄2x30-1⁄2" including seam allowances. Repeat to make bottom border No. 1 strip.

6. Join side border No. 1 strips to long edges of quilt center. Add top and bottom border No. 1 strips to remaining edges. Press all seams toward border No. 1.

7. Add blue stripe 2x36-1⁄2" border No. 2 strips to long edges of quilt center. Join blue stripe 2x33-1⁄2" border No. 2 strips to remaining edges. Press seams toward border No. 2.

8. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, sew together two gray print 1-1⁄2x39-1⁄2" strips and one green stripe 1-1⁄2x39-1⁄2" strip to make a long border No. 3 strip. Press seams toward green stripe. Repeat to make a second long border No. 3 strip. Join long border No. 3 strips to long edges of quilt center. Press seams toward border No. 3.

9. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, sew together two gray print 1-1⁄2x33-1⁄2" strips and one green stripe 1-1⁄2x33-1⁄2" strip to make a short border No. 3 strip. Press seams toward green stripe. Add a red dot 31⁄2" square to each end of short border No. 3 strip to make a top border No. 3 strip. Press seams toward squares. Repeat to make a matching bottom border No. 3 strip. Sew top and bottom border No. 3 strips to remaining edges of quilt center. Press seams toward border No. 3.

10. Add blue dot 5x45-1⁄2" border No. 4 strips to long edges of quilt center. Join blue dot 5x48-1⁄2" border No. 4 strips to remaining edges to complete quilt top. Press seams toward border No. 4.
