Vintage Threads Quilt Shoppe

A serendipitous meeting leads to a long-dreamed-about quilt shop in Dyersville, Iowa.

Cozy Haven [1]

Vintage Threads Quilt Shoppe fills the nooks and crannies of a 100-year-old building with bolts of fabric, wool, patterns, and quilting tools. A loft serves as a retreat space for quilters. The shop, located in Dyersville, Iowa, came about after owners Sue Maloney and Deb Jaeger met at a quilting retreat where they discovered their similar dream of owning a quilt shop.

Buying Local [7]

Deb Jaeger’s husband made the store shelves. The store also features samples by local quiltmakers, a cabinet by a local woodworker, and quilt racks made by the barber who works down the street. The store’s customers come from all over the United States to see the town made famous by the movie Field of Dreams and visit the eclectic shop.

Machine-Quilting Designs [11]

Peg Ries machine-quilted feathers in the dark tan areas of the Puss in the Corner blocks and diagonal grids in the centers of the Nine-Patch Star blocks. She repeated the feather design in the outer border of the quilt.

Spice Medley Color Option [13]

For her smaller version, quilt tester Laura Boehnke reimagined Spice Medley as a crib quilt of organic cotton. Laura surrounded four Ohio Star blocks with 14 Nine-Patch Star blocks and 17 Puss in the Corner blocks. Fabrics are from the Shipyard collection by Timeless Treasures [14].
