One look at the sock monkeys dressed in clever costumes in the storefront window of Pendleton Quiltworks in Pendleton, Oregon, lets quilters know that they are entering a relaxed environment.
Pendleton Quiltworks is housed in a 1904 brick building in historic downtown Pendleton, Oregon.
The shop is known for its excellent selection of batiks and Western-theme prints among its 1,500 bolts. It also carries Australian aboriginal fabrics–a rarity in quilt shops.

Quilts in all sizes are arranged on the brick walls at Pendleton Quiltworks. Here, a sampling of seasonal quilts adds to the decor.
Rachelle and her husband, David, bought the building in 2003. David and a cousin completely gutted and renovated the structure. When they found deep gouges in the fir floors, David filled the holes with old poker chips and silver dollars.
At Pendleton Quiltworks, they’re devoted to sock monkeys. Two stuffed simians dressed in seasonal garb always occupy the front window.
Pendleton Quiltworks displays a large selection of stitched samples, including The Neighborhood by Sweetwater Patterns.
In addition to quilt patterns, the shop offers patterns for childrens’s clothing, such as Pepper’s Easy Dress by Vanilla House Designs and To Tie for Dress by Olive Ann Designs.
Rachelle Doherty, Pendleton Quiltworks owner, and employee Colleen Blackwood designed From the Outside In for Quilt Sampler® Fall/Winter 2012 magazine.
Johanne Moore, a staff member at Pendleton Quiltworks, machine-quilted overlapping curls in the brown batik rectangles of each Churn Dash block and in the star point units. She stitched curved triangles in the triangle-squares, added a four-pointed star in each block center, and quilted the tan batik areas of the blocks, setting triangles, and corner triangles with wave motifs. The inner border features a pattern of curls and loops, and the outer border is filled with a feather pattern.
