During the 1800s, Almonte, Ontario, was home to seven flourishing woolen mills. Now The Quilting Quarters, located in a 1906 building that originally was a pharmacy, carries on the town’s textile tradition.
The family-run quilt shop abounds with quilted samples. Owner Susan Shute’s mother, Carole Shute, helps cut and order fabric and stitches many of the samples at The Quilting Quarters. Susan’s father, Albert, works on everything from accounting to answering the phone at the shop.
Customers can expand their quilting skill sets with the different techniques, such as the curved piecing used on this purse, taught in classes offered at The Quilting Quarters.
Shop owner Susan Shute and staff member Joni Newman designed Woodland Stroll, a quilt featuring Grandmother’s Fan blocks, for Quilt Sampler® Spring/Summer 2013 magazine.
Carol Darou machine-quilted feathers in the fans and pebbles in the light beige print background. She stitched a scroll design in the inner border and accented the outer border with an allover scroll motif.
