Look on the Bright Side
The selection of fabrics in brights, batiks, and prints at Material Girl in Grand Island, Nebraska, encourages quilters to use bold colors in contemporary quilt patterns.
The shop, just a few miles north of Interstate 80, combines bright, bold quilting fabrics with antiques in a homey atmosphere.

Inspired by the Past
Owners Debbie and Ken Warren, who previously owned antiques stores, use their experience to inspire fabric and sample displays.
Fusion of Old and New
At Material Girl, antique mailboxes hold bright fat quarters.
Burst of Blooms
Debbie Warren designed Burst of Blooms for Quilt Sampler Fall/Winter 2010 magazine.
Shelley Carmichael echoed the flowers and leaves in the fabric with machine quilting, outlining various details in the small floral block centers and the large floral setting squares.
Burst of Blooms Color Option
Quilt tester Laura Boehnke took advantage of the block centers in Burst of Blooms to showcase fussy-cut jungle animal outlines from the Baobob Flannels collection from RJR Fabrics. She chose to widen the outer border, cutting strips 9-1/2” wide, to feature the fabric collection’s decorative border print in the frame of this 60-1/2”-square baby quilt.
