This pillowcase, donated to the 1 Million Pillowcase Project, journeyed its first three stories before reaching its recipient.
First, the "Jazz City" fabric itself is a story: designed from the fine art of a blind man and a deaf woman, both Art of Possibility artists, their creative communion resulted in a stunning 16-piece collection that puts the fun in funky. The artists, whose physical limitations strongly compromise their ability to contribute, are able to share their gifts in the visual arts with quilters and home sewers.
The next story is deeply personal: a story of friendship. When approached to donate a pillowcase, Art of Possibility founder Ketra Oberlander leaped at the idea of sharing. Blind herself, she understands both the marginalization of a physical barrier and the drive to participate. Unable to sew herself, she called a quilter friend. Her friend was quick to accept the offer of a sewing project, despite her own busy life. The handiwork that details this beautiful pillowcase is by Chris Koltermann.
Now, Chris runs a business, has a husband and two kids, sits on the school board, is active in her quilt guild and her kids' enrichment activities (including being a Girl Scout leader and project leader for 4H), and between the time Ketra asked and Chris completed the project, she logged thousands of miles on a family trip and confronted a dramatic, scary family medical emergency. Yet she sewed. And when she got up from the sewing machine, project completed, she wrote the preface for what will be the third story:
"You know, this would be a great 4H and Girl Scouts sewing project for the kids," Chris concluded.
Chris created this basic pillowcase using Jazz City fabric from Free Spirit.
