1 post.

sisters, s’mores, and scorpions…oh my!

Be sure to check out the August issue of American Patchwork & Quilting (on newsstands now) for a wonderful profile featuring Me and My Sister Designs! Sisters Barb Groves and Mary Jacobson have been designing fabric and patterns together for over 15 years. I was lucky enough to spend two days  photographing their wonderful homes and studios. We had so much fun together that it was hard to even call it “work!” Everything about this duo, from their personalities to the bright and cheerful colors they select for their fabric lines, exudes happiness. In fact, their new fabric line with Moda Fabrics (just introduced at International Quilt Market) is called Happy!

I just love the photo of Mary and Barb, below. It was one of our outtakes on the shoot, and to me it just sums up sisterly love:) When I asked them what is like to work with a sibling, they said that one of things they enjoy is that they can be completely honest with each other because they are sisters. I just love that answer!

After our fun at the photo shoots, Mary, Barb and their husbands took our photo crew out to dinner at a great place called San Tan Flat. If you are ever in the Phoenix area, be sure to stop by for some great food and entertainment. For dessert, we ordered S’mores kits and roasted our marshmallows in open fire pits while enjoying live entertainment. To top off the evening, we looked for scorpions with black lights in Barb’s backyard. I had never seen a scorpion before and didn’t quite believe them when they told me that they glow when they’re underneath a black light. I just had to see it for myself and they were nice enough to indulge me:) After some searching, we finally found three scorpions and guess what…they do glow neon green! Don’t ask me how, but it is a pretty cool sight to see.

So, that’s a small peek into the behind-the-scenes fun I had with Me and My Sister Designs. I hope you enjoy their complete profile story and quilt Color Your World in our August issue of American Patchwork & Quilting. Below are a few more outtakes from the photo shoot. Our crew had a lot of fun posing with these cut-out boards (leftovers from Barb and Mary’s 2009 booth at quilt market). Personally, I think our photographer Jason looks fabulous with long hair and a one-piece swimming suit!
