Lila’s daughter’s birthday is June 14th, Flag Day. “We always hang the flag out to celebrate her birthday, and that’s carried over into my quilts,” says Lila. This quilt hangs in the entryway of Lila’s home. In addition to being a nod to Flag Day and the 4th of July, it’s a celebration of the many quilting classes Lila’s been fortunate to take. “We have a very active guild that brings in lots of excellent teachers,” says Lila. “When I made this signature quilt I wasn’t sure who should sign the blocks. Then I decided to have the teacher of every class I take sign it.” Since this picture was taken, the center signature spaces are full, and Lila’s teachers names also fill the larger, white spaces along border. “I’ve still got room for five or six more,” she says. The border corners also feature eight Fifty-four Forty or Fight blocks, another of Lila’s favorites. “I wanted to use that block, but it requires a template and I didn’t want to have to make too many of them,” says Lila. “So this was a way to include the block, but use it sparingly.
